Free to play or free to "own"?
I am curious what the term means. Does this mean it's only free to play for the weekend only or is it free to play forever if we download CKII like buying the game for free. Reason I put own in quotes in the title is we don't own any digital game, so not sure if the proper term would be free to play as you "own" the game.

Also, is there a must for DLC? Looks like a great bait, give game for free, buy DLC. Great idea. BUT seeing how much DLC there is, is it one of those Paradox games that the DLC "fix" the vanilla game or makes the vanilla game better as vanilla is good as is.

Just don't like how we need to keep buying DLC all the time to make the game better instead of improving on it. Just wondering if this is one of those cases or not.

Thank you for the reply.

That is what I thought, but seeing "free to play" could mean FtP as like lots of online games, or as I see Steam do, and lately consoles do it, "free to play" usually means on weekend only. No where do I say we get to "keep" the game. Also it doesn't say when the free part stops.

Also no indication that you need to buy it by a certain date. So I am confused.

Base game is old and limited as there over $100 of dlc.

You can get free Old Gods DLC from Paradox too. It pretty much lets you play around the whole world. One of the strongest DLC's in CK2. You can play as the Zoroastrians in Persia, Bon in Tibet, African pagans in Africa (who would have guessed) and Baltic Pagans.

Lots fun, I clocked may hours with Old Gods alone.

As of the announcement of CK3, CK2 is now free to play. DLCs are still not free though, but you can get the Old Gods for free by making an account on paradoxplaza.

They say on Steam F2P during Paradox Con, not forever, but say Free to Keep on their website, so this confusing.

The base game is free and its a great way to explorer if you like this kind of game. You can get all the dlc's cheap, but due to the release of CK3 in 2020, I would most likely wait for that if I were you, if you like this.

The only downside is that if you used the family share feature, no one will have access to your DLC, since they now own the base game.

Yes the base game is now free to keep and it's also not timely limited. You can come back in 2 months and it will still be free to play so there is no rush in trying to get it now. By clicking play it will be added to your library. So it's not a timely limited free giveway of the game but rather the base game was changed to be entirely free to play permanently.

The game is free to play forever as confirmed by Paradox on social media today

Not saying you are wrong, only reason I knew CKII was out for free to play was reading it in an online article and said grab before Oct 21 or it will no longer be free. So I come to the site and see no mention of that, so that is why I am puzzled.

Good to know I can take my time and try out the game at a later date.

Be sure to check out CK3 promotion and get Old Gods DLC if you still don't have it. It's one of the strongest DLC's and it's free for limited time.

Forgot to say in my last post, thank you everyone for all the help and great tips. I try and do as you say. Downloading now.

I am stumped right now. How do I tell Paradox I have CKII? I see I have my HoI IV and Stellaris there, but now CKII. How do I link it or what ever it is called. Sorry I do not know the proper terminology.
