Interesting Starts NOT on the wiki
Feel free to add in any of yours.

I of course loves the sseth video which made me want to go back to ck2 since I've spent a lot of time with it in the past.

The biggest issue I have now when I try to start a campaign is that I cant choose. I really hate the idea of starting as a king or emperor.

I do really enjoy the challenge of working from a weaker start though I'm not averse to having a duchy as a demesne.

I find that working my way up to an empire is the most enjoyable part.

However others have their own preferences so if you have any suggestions for an interesting character that's not on the wiki post em here to help out the ssethtide!

And everyone else too of course.

Idk man. I'm not interested in being powerful so kings and emperors are out, I don't prefer to be a duke either.

Ideally I prefer being a count and working my way up. Kind of like the hapsburg start but I've done that a bunch of times.

I'd say my preference is for a western European catholic count or minor Duke.

Maybe its having ao many choices that's tough.

I was hoping for some responses that might help me as a lapsed player as well as any newer ones coming in bc of the sseth video choose who to play as!

I would recommend Roussel de Bailleul. His start date is in 1072 and he is a independent duke in the middle of Anatolia. From the West he is bordering powerfull Byzantine Empire, and from the East he is facing a danger of the most powerfull country at the time, the Seljuk Turks. He is between a hammer and anvil.

I played this start myself and it was a lot of fun, but also a big challenge. At some point I ended as subject to Seljuks due to their onslaught, but managed to break free again.

You are independent, and yes you are a duke tier. But because of your independence your start is even tougher in this sitiation. You are a Norman catholic stuck between orthodox greeks and muslim turks. May God help you :)

Do an 'inquisitor' campaign. Be a count or duke under a kingdom or empire and gear your characters towards intrigue. Use the WoL intrigue focus and then spy on people that form and/or join factions against your liege and then blackmail/imprison/assassinate them.

One of my favorite play throughs was doing that in the 769 start as the Count of Bari. My dynasty helped the Gaussian's become kings of Sicily and were rewarded with the Duchy of Sardinia.

1) Use the random character option in the custom start window
2) Take a medieval character and try to relive their live.
3) Give yourself some limiting rules concerning claims, marriage, war etc.
4) Roleplay by traits
5) Be a gothic cultured ruler in Crimea in a 1066 start and...survive or so.

Not sure when one is landed and where.
Only know that there is a crimean_gothic file in histroy/characters.
6) Start as Hugo de Lusignan VI "The devil" (1066) , annoy the church as much as you can, then around 40 help others against muslims, join their wars and go on holy wars and crusades.
7) Start as an Etichonen, take the decision to become Habsburg and form the Archduchy of Austria and then the kingdom of Austria. Land a relative inside your kingdom and start the game as him fighting your former self.
8) The latter reminds me, have you ever started a save as another character ? That can be interesting. Maybe changing charatcer in the same campaign save every ten years or so.

Exacly that he served before for Roger the Hauteville. Later he came to Byzantine Empire as a mercenary, betrayed 2 times, second time he was beheaded. But before that he managed to create his own chiefdown with support of local population. It took Byzantines asking for Sejkus help to deggeat him. And finally he died because of a smart move by Alexios Kommenos.

I highly recommend the video titled Roussel de Bailleul & The Norman Invasion of Anatolia
I played him before it came out, but listening to it now it gives a lot of new informations.

Lol not bad but maybe for a different start I think since I haven't played in a long time I'll need to do a more simple start in a catholic europe

I definitely have an italian count I believe the count of capua in 1066.

I see a lot of suggestions for Matilda di Toscana.

However she's way too powerful imo so I would prefer a count with one or two provinces or maybe a weaker duke.

Ideally of course I prefer the good old fashioned OPM.

I mention northern Italy bc I've never actually played any characters there at any point in time covered by the game.

Northern Italy is pretty good, I'd pick just about any one of the counts there in any of the earlier start dates before there's a HRE.

Sounds good to me. I have mainly played in England, Ireland, HRE, Spain, Scotland, Wales.

I need to try somewhere in Eastern Europe, as well as the Byzantine Empire.

Starting as the Kola in 769 reform the Germanic religion, form the Scandinavian Empire AND the HRE by Year 950-1000
Zorelnam Oct 20, 2019 @ 4:42pm
double click the province for count

I don't get it but I find myself getting paralyzed right after starting. Right around the time I have to find the ideal wife for whoever I start with and trying to educate children.

It's also really frustrating bc I picked the southernmost county of Ireland and actually did start playing and I thought to be safe I'd swear fealty to mumu and then take over the neighboring counts who were his vassals but the douche actually tried to revoke my title!

So then I went back to trying to pick a character.

I suppose part of it is that a lot changed after I left CK2 for a long time which was Charlemagne.

So especially a lot of the conclave stuff is causing me to get tied up.

Another thing is that I have the instinctive reaction that "I didn't earn it" if I pick anything but an OPM but then when I do am lacking on a lot of the newer mechanics and find it very difficult to start that way.

I know it's stupid but I have a very hard time picking dukes or kings but now I do think I'm ready to give it a try especially if I can get over not having to carve out that dukedom or kingdom by myself.

I think permanent Vassal runs can be "fun" if not infuriating if your Liege AI goes loco (HOI4 French AI but entire of france is a Maginot Line) but its not like you can have to plot them killed if you got the intrigue
