And on the paradox forums, there's this thread.

I've done both the Gupta Restoration and Hephthalite Restoration (as Zunist). Gupta was one of the longest, most boring playthroughs I have ever done in CK2.
It was literally a lot of just waiting for current character to die so that heir, or in some cases, heir's heir, could inherent and refresh the once in a life time CB.
Restoring the Hephthalite Empire was more interesting since the goal is basically Rajastan and parts of the Persian Empire. While the start was rough, once you were established, you had paths outside of India to look to while you played the waiting game when dealing with the India half of what will become your empire.
I haven't played in that part of the world since conclave or reaper's though, so it might be less boring now than when I played.
The only problem would be the low MA since most of India becomes Hindu most of the times.
Honestly, with the Hunas, it's a bit of a slow start. I would recommend (especially if you have Way of Life and Conclave) to chose a focus that will be useful to your liege. For example, I've been given duchies by kings while using the Intrigue focus to terrorize vassals that form factions.
While doing that, play the marrying game so that you can make alliances and inherit titles.
Once you've built up a decent power base, then you can start being an expansionist.
When you reach the muslim lands in central asia, things pick up since you can holy war.
You can prepare invade the Abbasid Caliphate for Baluchistan. If you're able to pull it off, India is next door.
This is english...
I don't have conclave, I have way of life dlc. I don't understand very well your advices... do you mean that my king could give me duchies?
Yes, they can hand you a duchy for being very useful to them.
Ahh, ok, so what do you think of this strategy?: faith focus, when I was the money and the karma, up my caste. Then put intrigue focus and try to end complots against my king. So he will give me more titles for this? sure?
