switching character
Sometimes, especially when realms get divided by your kids, I find myself in a situation where I would like to have an option which of those successing parts I would want to continue to play, instead of being bound to the one ruling the capital province of the former undivided realm.

Would you consider it cheating or gamey to then save and reload as the preferred son (probably the one ruling that part promising the most potential)?
This wouldn't abandon your dynasty, so it is basically nothing else than "regular" character switching when your ruler has died.

I am not talking ironman here.

So guys, what is your opinion?

There is no cheating in singleplayer.

It doesn't really matter if you're not playing Ironman, so do whatever you're comfortable with.

use console commands if you aren't worried about cheating.

Agreed, it's a personal decision. The way I see it, I am managing a dynastic family, not necessarily one branch of it. If one character is more interesting, by all means, switch to him. I had territories in France, Scotland, & Ireland and was trading off being King of Scotland with a rival. I was on a down cycle when lo and behold, I discovered one of my relatives became King of Aquitaine. I jumped over there and played the rest of the game out with them.

Who cares? Play how you want. So long as you are enjoying yourself, that's all that matters.

  1. open console using ~ key
  2. type "charinfo" and press enter
  3. hover mouse cursor over the character's portrait you wish to play as and take note of their character ID
  4. open the console again and type "play <insert character ID here>" and press enter

Well, the game has rules on how to play it. If u surpass these rules to do stuff they forbid, then u're breaking them.

In example, we can't just declare war to anybody, there are rules we must comply. In the same way, there are rules (with different laws) on who inherits a char's lands when he dies, we players can't just choose who receive each county, duchy, kingdom, etc. There are rules and consequences for revoking and granting titles. We also can't make our char die or retire, but there's a way to make him suicide.

Same way, we can't just choose which char we're gonna play. So, if we change the game's rules, we're unbalancing it somehow.

Then, of course, when it's singleplay, we're not affecting other players. And the game has both command line tool and modding API to allow us to make such changes. In my understanding, using them isn't hacking, but is cheating.

Sometimes it's a lot of fun to change the game rules to create new fun ways of playing. In example, I'm playing AGOT and using a mod so I impregnate all kings' wifes.

you are totally right.
Especially since sadly nobody really got what I meant in the OP.

I didn't intend any cheat or break of rules...

Just wished for a game feature. Whenever your character dies, maybe let the game do an autosave and/or open up a window offering you to chose which one of your dead character's offsprings you want to continue playing with...
