Only tips I can give you are the ones I have used to keep my characters alive. My characters usually always die in battle, by disease or by natural death. I think you only need to avoid getting assassinated which is surprisingly easy by just making sure to treat your subjects fairly and have a good spymaster scheming on your capital all the time.
Also I would not risk my skin on a battlefield AT ALL. As an emperor I'm sure there are plenty of people to do that for you :)
As for dying, there's that pesky event about another immortal who could possibly try to kill you, if it fires. You mentioned your character being a "total badass", how strong is he in terms of Personal Combat Skill / Intrigue / Learning? If any of those is very high, you should have a much better chance at surviving an encounter with an immortal rival.
Over 20 in learning, intrigue, diplomacy. Almost 20 stewardship. Marital is like 15 and personal combat score isn't anything special. I know there are characters with much better stats (Satan spawns cough cough) but when I say "badass" I mean as far as accomplishments which I know are pretty irrelevant with regards to passing event stat checks. He's personally went from a count under the Byzantines to emperor of the Roman Empire. Now the requonquering is being done.
Becoming a Satanist's another good way to go at it. Be aware that, should you go down that path, your traits will likely tank down a fair amount at the beginning, although it tends to stabilize back up (though heavy focused on intrigue) later down the line.
I got the great pox on purpose since it usually makes you go insane. Then Satan not only cured my syphillis but also made my eye grow back! I got the glitter hoof and immortal glitterhoof events so let's see what happens.
