Best succession law?
Whats your favourite succession law? I used to like elective but i dont like the chance that my vassals dont like my only heir so when i die i lose my kingdom title and my heir becomes a crappy count or duke

They all suck really. But I think I like ultimogeniture most. Premature deaths are not that common and I can usually plan to have a non-insane kid in 16-30 age range when I die.

Second place is elective when you are a king and have only one duke.

Third place is primogeniture while being Byzantine emperor.

Primo is best, I think. Don't really see any downsides with it, except for opinion, which is easily managed. Once you have a huge dynasty, you can go Gavelkind and make sure to only have one legit male heir and a ton of bastards to legitimize if something happens to the sole heir.

Primogeniture as a Buddhist or Jain will make you cry for momma next time you play as anything else.

I've been a big fan of seniority lately. It plays really well into playing the marriage game, as you just need to get other family members landed, and then territory will be accumulated over time. Plus, it is a lot easier to get than primo and ultimo. I also like elective, it is one of the few flexible election types available to Christians in general. It carries a lot more risk, but managed well you can usually get the heir you want, similar to open or nomadic. Ultimo is pretty gamey, as whenever you get your perfect heir you can divorce/murder your wife or use M&M to take a vow of celibacy to stop further kids, which you can still rectify if things go bad. Primo is just the safe option. Your heir will almost always be an adult whose growth you had fairly close control over, but rarely your best possible heir. And a lot of people like to hate on gavelkind, but so long as you avoid having multiple top level titles, seeding dynastic members into your vassals isn't that bad of a thing, the extra demense boost is super useful in the right situations, and you can game it a hell of a lot more than that with Way of Life seduction focus. EGK is just for people with no other options, as in tribal pagans.

I feel like all the succession types have their place and are balanced by the risks associated with them. Open is far and by the best, but then it is only available to Muslim characters.

Tanistry is my favorite elector-style succession.

Open and Nomadic are both solid, though Open is the easiest to manipulate.

Any succession that allows you to simply designate an heir (some of the indian religions and Patrician Senority) are also pretty solid.

Out of the standard basic ones probably Ultimo, Senority, and Gavelkind. Each used for specific purposes when I need to break up territory or re-combine it or just keep a holding pattern to kill time.

Senority is a solid one if you perscribe to the Dynastic Dominence style of play, since it keeps your territory combined up, and once you united all of your titles under one banner you can switch to something else.

tanistry is good to managed a little celtic realm such as brittany or wales. You can own all dukes and count title an choose who you want, even a woman over men (with agnatico-cognatic). The only restriction isnt really one, you have to nominate a dynatic member. But if you didnt you loose, so it is not really a restriction.

Primogeniture for sure. If you are catholic and have vassalized the pope, it's even easier. Don't like an heir? Excommunicate him, imprison him, and either force him to take the vows (will work, even if he is your heir) or just get him killed. You get to basically choose any kid you want to be you heir.

I always thought it was a downside, unless you are in early game and playing a small dynasty. It's very hard to keep a large sprawling empire under control because my capital troops take many months to reach fringe areas if they need to. I prefer installing my dynasty members as kings in other realms and then letting them manage their own affairs unless they get into real trouble.

Elective is only really good if your dynasty members hold most elector titles.
jfoytek Jul 8, 2017 @ 8:32pm
Elective is fine if you keep all the electors in the dynasty....

Primogeniture especially if you're jain/buddhist as mentioned earlier or as the Roman Empire. Iqta is nice as Muslim, but you might end up screwed if you land your heir and he dies with an imbecile son to take over... Elective is what I usually go for as anything else.

This is why you land only one heir and give him a single county or barony. If things really go that far south, you can take the -10 tyranny hit to just revoke. Giving dynasty members too much land isn't that great an idea when you are playing a Muslim anyways, with decadence and all that.
