How can I survive the invasion as a tribal King of Ireland?

Manage to have territories outside of ireland because you will lose them; you won't win as tribal or feudal except you own roman empire maybe?

Besides you should change to feodal when aztec come; like in 1000 years?

Yeah you're screwed. The only ways to survive, if you are the primary or secondary target, are to control lands in multiple kingdoms (so that when you lose you don't get a game over) or already be a huge blob so you can fight them off. Both are really hard early game. Even if you have a couple of counties all over, if they show up early they will just roflstomp everyone with their event stacks and you'll die a death of a thousand cuts. I'd turn them (and Mongols) on Delayed Random or Historical.

I have Iceland, should I try to get a county in scandinavia?
Also, will converting to their religion help me?

Yes.
No.

You can beat them, but definitely not as tribal. I had it set to delayed random so I was already a huge blob by the time they showed up.

honestly the only real way ive ever managed to is either be a central europe located medium-large empire and help the christians being attacked OR
i survived a game where i started as duke leofwine in england wound up inheriting several duchies across spain france and southern england and was able to be allied with so many different rulers that when they landed in galicia i was able to repel their first army with some trouble and their second army landed in ireland and never really left.
i tried checking the old save file but its so old at this point its completely uncompatible and wont even load up. im pretty sure they either became catholic or irish and so lost their subjugation or invasion CB.

regardless, you need to be BIG to oppose them single handedly as far as i can recall they land with an attritionless doomstack in spain/mauritania or ireland/northern scotland. im sure if youre playing far enough inland theyll never get to you though, the seem to tucker out relatively quickly after gaining a decent chunk of land.

this is just pure speculation but they were added back in the day that the mongols had a similar invasion mechanic instead of a nomad based government, the mongols under the old way of invasion could easily sweep to the atlantic if the political climate was turbulent enough, but then there used to be games that i played where rus alone stopped them.

TL:DR

this game is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ varied that honestly there is no cookie cutter way to beat the invasion, im sure if there are 1000 players that have beaten them there are probably at least twice as many ways that its happened, although i can boil it down to really 3 ways: religious conversion, huge alliance, huge empire. hopefully youll feudalise before they come.

I've played three games where the Aztecs showed up:

1. Aztecs launched an invasion on Cornwall and a second one on Brittany. Through the next 50 years, they took chunks of West Francia and Germany, but stayed mostly quiet. Immediately after the AI managed to create England, the Aztecs invaded and took it over. Then they took Aquitaine from the Umayyads. Through the next 100 years, they continued to swallow up the Frank kingdoms and Andalusia. I managed to wipe out their event stacks during the 2nd crusade against them using my italian pikes. Thereafter, the Aztecs started getting rebellions left and right, eventually fracturing.

2. Started the game with the sole intention of beating back the Aztecs and getting the achievement. In preparation, I became the emperor of Britannia, and controlled Brittany, West Francia, Aquitaine, and Burgundy. As seen in the screenshot I posted, I raised about 50k levies with some holy orders and mercenaries thrown in. (Note: If you create retinues after you get notices about Aztecs preparing to invade, they'll only be at ~25% strength when the invasion happens.)

3. Conquered the entire world as a nomad horde and burned all holdings to the ground. The Aztecs invaded and attacked me while I was in Egypt(!). All my hordes were in Spain/Brittany/Ireland waiting for their invasion so it took me a whole year to get them back there. Since I controlled the whole world though, the Aztecs only got ~5% warscore taking over all of Egypt/Arabia before I got there and destroyed them. But then they launched a second invasion at Iceland. I lost that one since I had no ships except for ~50 from mercs. Attacking from the sea and sending in troops 5K at a time towards a deathstack of 100k Aztecs is pretty much impossible to win. Curiously though, they never attacked me for the following 200 years till the game eded.

in my game the sunset invasion and the mongols have arrived at roughly the same time. The Mongols took all of N Africa and the middle east, the Aztecs took western europe but were stopped at italy and eastern germany. im just waiting for the mongols to attack spain and watch theyre doom stacks wipe each other out

You turn Aztec Invasion off, thats how you beat it.
