1453 - why 'the end'?
Just last week I bought CK2 in the sale, and already I am loving it. But there is a gripe I have with the game.

I was a little bit disappointed that CK2 is the only strategy game I have played (so far) has end-date that is set in stone - 1453, where the game cannot be played any further. While I appreciate that this is still a very large, and generous space of time to enjoy playing, I still don't really like to think that I am limited to what I can achieve within a set time (which I also appreciate is something that some players might enjoy).

I am aware that there are mods and ways of changing the game's code to get around this, but I was wondering why there isn't simply a patch that gives you the option of playing beyond 1453 when you start a game. Mods and changing the code also leads to other issues, like screwing with multiplayer etc) Performance issues (like the game slowing down because of having to remember every character that ever was in the game) that would insue from playing beyond 1453 would be at the player's own volition, choice and risk, not concrete limits set by the game.

Also, before some smart alec says "there is a DLC where you can continue your game into EU4", I am aware of this. But I don't want to, even if it means not being able to convert my save file into EU4 later. Although (for example) Empire: Total War does have an end date, it still lets you play on, even if the tech tree ends and everything forever more is as though it were still the 1700s - it doesn't make you buy Napoleon: Total War to carry on your game.

tl;dr - Why is there no play after 1453?

Because it's not needed. With Charlemagne or Old Gods you'll probably quit before you even come close to the end date. And if you don't congrats, you've played almost 700 years as one dynasty. Now start a new game.

Because it is a different era that the game is not intended to represent and is covered by the EU series.

You answered your own question with several logical answers and locked yourself out of extending it by saying you won't mod. There's not really anything useful any one can say here. Also lol @ your steam name and avatar :)

Get Charlemagne DLC and you could be playing for hundreds of hours though in just one game depending on your speed. It's a good pack.

That's not my point. I don't really mind if, in my game, the world stays in medieval times forever (ah, the CK2 effect).

If you are that keen on it then why not just subscribe to a mod, see if you like it or not. Maybe even just unsubscribe when you play proper games, but have one save that uses the mod. Putting a mod on favoutites and changing subscription state would take seconds.

No reason why you can't have the best of both worlds really.

It takes me about 300 hours or about 400 years to take over the world. The game starts to get really slow and crashes a lot after that period. I can see why the devs put a time cap on the game for those performance issues alone.

I have almost 900 hundred hours in this game and have never reached 1200 a.d. from a 769 start.

I think the Charlemagne DLC does seem like a logical option, but what my point was (and I should have made this clearer) why they didn't make it a choice. It kinda puts you off wanting to play a game starting in 1337 when it's just going to end about 100 years later). But yeah, of course, there has to be a be a point where you go "meh, maybe I should play as someone else".

yes, this game has so many options it can take a while to tailor it to your experience and full enjoyment but it can be done.

All of Paradox's games cover a certain timeframe. CKII 769-1453, EUIV 1444-1821, Victoria II 1836-1936, HoI IV 1936-1948, Stellaris 2200-??

Mods don't work on multiplayer (as far as I know anyway). But I think you're right, and that the Charlemagne DLC is probably the most sensible alternative. Cheers.

I was mainly wondering why no play is allowed beyond those time frames in vanilla, even if it does mean performance issues that the player should be aware of when doing so.

the host and players need the same exact mods installed and they work

Really? Then problem solved!

If you use Charlemange games will last ages. I played through from 750s all the way to the end and the game took me almost a month of daily playing to finish it.

You also get a nice achievement for it c:

I don't think that with 30 hours experience I'm ready to take on Ironman Mode to get achievements. Not yet anyway lol
