killing Mathias

Im at the end of Lara Croft and the final fight against Mathias. I can stab him with my axe but when I have to mash the interaction button I cant push him off. No matter how fast I mash or how rhythmically (sic) I mash it he always kills me and I try again. I cant believe that Ive made it to the very end and I cant kill Mathias as I have killed all other enemies and used the interaction button throughout the game. Any suggestions?

Instead of mashing the key fast try doing it more slowly - I found that setting up an alternative key sometimes helps, but I beat Mathias by tapping the key a bit slower...
