Concerning the Japanese localization costs: the PC market may be tiny, but don't overlook the fact that the translation costs are shared with console versions.

I wasn't talking about the PC market. The Japanese gaming market, consoles included, is tiny. And is in fact, growing smaller. Look at the sales figures (which only ever count console releases). Most games have a hard time selling more than 20,000 units. Where as in the US, that would be 200,000 units. Or around 250,000 units in Europe. This is why prices in Japan are far higher; significantly less people buy games (especially games such as this which are primarily aimed at the Western market) compared to other regions.

As for the Japanese language being available from the initial release; that was a mistake by Valve -- not their first -- they pushed out the wrong version. They did this previously with the Japanese version of Homefront too -- another game where only the US import version is meant to be available on Steam (and another where the JPN version is significantly more expensive).

But by all means, continue to misunderstand the situation and claim Square as evil.

The "traditional" market (PC + consoles) is getting smaller here, granted. Not sure whether it's getting bigger anywhere really.

Now if you include mobile games, the assertion is ridiculous. Ride any commuting train, and you will see cohorts playing. I won't say there is a lot of variety. At any given time, only a couple of games seem to be popular while the rest gets blatantly ignored, and they always seem to rely on a recipee of collectibles and grinding... boring. And not a huge surprise in post-Monster Hunter Japan. But it's ridiculous to ignore that very lively segment of the market.

Evil, no. Clumsy and inconsiderate is more like it.
