They struggle for control of the gun, mashing [E] makes the gun rise and point towards the attacker, you need to mash hard and the prompt will change to the gun icon when it's pointing at him and that's when you press fire.
Also, when the key tells you to press the "E" key, let go of the "F" key and press the "E" to shoot the guy. This is a pretty common part of the game and you'll learn to control the key better by not mashing it so hard.
One more thing that I've learned from contributors like these:
When you get prompted to use a specific key/action, movement will slow down mid-fight and white ring(s) will appear. This ring will get smaller and then turn to red. THIS is when you need to press the required key(s), when it's red. It will only be red for a moment. Timing is very very important. If you press too early or too late, Lara will lose the fight. You may be required to get two or three different actions right in a row, one after the other. Make sure you know which keys are represented by which prompts.
Don't give up on the game. Once you've perfected these actions, the later fights will be easier and more rewarding.
Best of luck to you.
