Just a mindless shoot-em-up. Nothing more
Played this on console and all I can say that this game has literaly has nothing to do with Tomb Raider, aside from the protagonist and the title.

All you do is just shoot.
Puzzle difficulty= joke
Tomb exploration and difficulty = close to zero

Gameplay consists of: horde killing-little platforming- horde killing- horde killing- 1 minute long puzzle- horde spawn event triggered- QTE -horde killing- QTE -horde event

I'm mindblown this game has good reviews despite the flatout repetitive and tedious shoot-em-up gameplay instead of adding actual game mechanics to the game that remotely resemble the old TR classics

"Just a mindless shoot-em-up. Nothing more"

Welcome to AAA gaming.

Tis my first TR game & I really enjoyed it though I agree with most of your points regarding the difficulty. For me it's an intro to a series I've been unsure of buying into. I'll definitely be looking at getting the previous (&next) in the series

Its problems go a lot deeper than being a bad Tomb Raider. It's a pretty mediocre game.

I think it got high reviews because of the story and collectable narrative, which the game did a good job on. The cut-scenes (however you are a fan of the general idea of cutscenes or not) we're kinda masterly shot. As well as the QTE's. I'm saying that as someone who isn't a fan of QTE's at all. Also they put in extreme destruction around you in heavily packed scenes that looked really crisp. If overused.
The game simply knows how to work a camera-angle in diffrent situations.

The combat was interesting to the extent that the guys have armor which requires an extra headshot. That they heavily relied on grenade fire and flaming arrows to keep you from overusing the coversystem etc. The problem IMO was that the game turned into horde-mode way to often.

The biggest problem I had with the game was that I found myself torn between actually following the main mission, or look for another page of diary entries. Which kinda ruins the agency. (I should go save X person, but I want that page which is behind that wall)
However, I've yet to play a game ever that has ever gotten that balance right.

I don't disagree much with ya, but then again. What you complained about isn't why people oughta like the game IMO.

Of course this latest Tomb Raider series was disappointment but in my opnion I only have enjoyed doing the secret tombs since the puzzle there were no tip at all popping at your screen like any other game do.Now everything else I thought boring and lame.

I'ts better than you describe it m8.

I think if the tombs were longer (like maybe took 30 minutes to do) and more challenging, the game would be perfect.

Regarding QTE's, im indifferent towards them. It doesn't bother me having to do them. I think the purpose is to create some sort of immersion effect. For example (semi spoilers) when Lara gets attacked by the wolf you have to mush buttons for the QTE to get away from the wolf. It kinda simulates a panic mode. I'd also like to add that there aren't even that many QTE's in this game. It's usually way over exaggerated by the players who despise them.

The combat is inded very different from the previous games. Although the "hordes" of enemies may not appeal to old school tomb raider fans, it's not bad by any means. The combat simply works. Some of the kills were pretty entertaining, such as stabbing someone in the knee with an arrow or strangling them with your bow.

The different areas throughout the island were linear, but did offer exploration in regards to finding collectables and completing challenges. Previous Tomb Radiers were much more linear, although they also offered collectables and whatnot... so I don't really understand your gripe with this?

Anywho, the sequal that's coming out SEEMS like it will focus more on actual tombs and a bit less on the hordes of enemies. It looks promising!
but its got boobs

Exactly this!

I don't mind shooting sections, but it was way overused. And mostly same enemies over and over again: archers, riflemens, unarmored melee, and melee heavy.

The samurai were the only exception but they appeared 2 times only.

Hostile wildlife was also nonexistant. We got the wolves and thats it.

And compared to older game you spend most of the time killing enemies instead of doing platforming or exploring.

The game it's great. It's not flawless though. It has it's fair share of shortcomings...

1. Collectables - Never felt any accomplishment other that a stupid achievement for collecting them. They were practically not related to the game. Just there to keep you busy doing something else... It would've been great for those collectibles to actually play a part in the game mechanics... But no, they were just optional bits of random stuff to do unrelated to anything at all...

2. Combat - While fun and well defined, it was almost overdone. It had too many scripted "horde combat scenes" and too little optional stealth combat. It would've been great to give player the option to go full stealth for the entire game without any killing involved, or go full metal guns blazin'. And Get rid of that CoD regenerating Health... please... Bring those health packs back!

3. Weapons - One thing must be told before everything else. THE BOW WAS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! Basically I've used other weapons just to get their respective achievements... One "issue" I had with the weapons was the unrealistic upgrades... While the weapons are all real life models, the upgrades combines various components from various weapon models creating unrealistic weapon hybrids. Not a big issue but more an observation. For a finicky player like myself, that kinda detracted from the immersion factor.

4. Wildlife - Definitely would've been great for the wildlife to play a role in the "survival" aspect. Didn't turned out to be like so, sadly... The only time it had was at the beginning of the game when Lara "needs to find some food". That's it... End. Why not add some more depth and use that to heal Lara... ? Bring those health packs back to heal Lara and in addition, use wildlife to replenish her stamina... well not stamina but that state of well being that including stamina, hunger etc... Hell, even go as far as making those health packs more effective after eating some deer...

5. Tomb Raider - Not a TR old player myself, but I can agree with old school TR fans complaining about tombs and basic TR'ish gameplay lacking... involving climbing puzzles, mandatory exploration and other elements alike... I've recently/finally got Tomb Raider 2013 on my PC and along with it I've also got myself TR: Anniversary to get a taste of the old school TR. So far I've finished TR 2013 and it was a very good game. Currently I've started playing TRA and it's sweet. There is definitely something missing from TR 2013. Even though the reboot it's the first TR I ever played, I can tell that it's lacking something... It's too "modernized" Playing TRA just "feels like home" I would love a mix between the two stiles, mixing what's best from both.

While I can honestly say I'll agree that the 2013 Tomb Raider isn't the same as the older ones, I don't think that's a bad thing. It's different. Like Daniel Craig vs. Sean Connery vs. Pierce Brosnan vs. Roger Moore vs. Timothy Dalton - they're all James Bond, but they're all different.

Tomb Raider has been around for almost 20 years - graphics have improved, gameplay has evolved and tastes have changed. The days of running around shooting bats, flipping levers and pushing blocks along the floor have given way to killing people, quicktime events and far fewer puzzles. You hear all the time that gamers don't want games to be hard - I don't think that's actually true, but there has been a definite move to provide a lot more hand holding and a lot less puzzle-solving.

I would like to see more tombs and puzzles in Tomb Raider, but I understand if the developers can't go back to the classic game - the 2013 version of Tomb Raider is a reboot of the franchise and takes the game in a different direction from previous games.

Well said gobuck's, and yes TR has taken a new direction, all the better I think, this is the 1st, she sucked you in and left you wanting more (wait)
80TCS Feb 21, 2015 @ 9:49am
The new direction will be revealed with Rise of the ⊥omb Raider. Hope it won't be the next "Resident Evil 6"

I agree. I really liked playing the classic Tomb Raider games (my favourite is chronicles!) and this has nothing to do with it. I even disliked the newer ones by Crystal dynamics (underworld etc.) but they are nothing compared to this game. No puzzles at all, always these "go to blah blah" or "do that to trigegr blah" hints and quicktime events. The game is optimized for casuals and was just disappointing for the other fans of the series.
