How do we reaccess the lower mountain village area after passing it?

I've missed two items and I have no idea how to reaccess this location

You can go back to the mountain village (where you first meet up with Roth and obtain the climbing axe) once you've gotten to a campsite that allows fast travel. You actually HAVE to go back to the site at least once or twice in order to get all of the items. (Some areas are not open to you initially and others can be accessed once you've obtained equipment you didn't have when you first got there...)

Hopefully you've saved your game to a separate save slot and aren't continuing from the "last campsite" - that will lead to some issues as you get near the end of the game...

I found that playing up to Helicopter Hill by followuing the storeline worked out best for me. By the time you get there and complete that fight, you've gain the flame arrows and have the rode so you can bridge across places where you couldn't before and also you have a good assortment of weapons to choose from and that makes finding some of the items easier. The only thing to remember is that coming back tio the mountain village after doing Helicopter Hill means you will have company to contend with.

I've never done that. Currently I'm in the middle of a level (that annoying 'fight your way through the palace' thingy), so that's going to be the first time I don't start at a campsite -- if that leaves areas inaccessible to me then it should be considered a rather massive bug (not that game companies would care about fixing bugs, though).

Thanks HE, it took a very annoying amount of time but I found the rope that leads down.

Near the end of the game you come to a "Point of No Return" - after that campsite you CAN'T fast travel back to earlier sites - you will come across another campsite after that and if you save the game at that campsite, NO FAST TRAVEL. I would recommend continuing the game from a saved game slot instead so if you manage to complete the game at less than 100% you'll be able to continue back to areas you've previously played and find any missing items or complete any challenges you might've bypassed.

Regarding the "Point of no Return" - you won't be able to fast travel UNTIL you finish the game. After that you are free to go to any place on the map and collect whatever is left.
The game spawns even some new enemies so you won't get too bored when free roaming.
