What that means is that for example if you have multiple monitors and you play with Exclusive Fullscreen Mode, only your primary monitor will work and the rest will turn off. But if you play the game without Exclusive Fullscreen Mode you will be able to see other monitors as well.
I know it's a dumb question but have you tried Ctrl+Enter or Ctrl+Alt or Alt+Enter ?
If so check your aspect ratio.
1. When you use a 46" t.v. or larger, you have no need for Big Picture mode! [just play games fullscreen]
2. Since you thought you needed to change your screen Res. when you hooked up your t.v. via HDMI, you must have had the desktop too large to fit your screen. You did not need to change the resolution. Heres what you do need to do to make the desktop background and everything else fit;
A. Change your Res back to where it was before you hooked up to your t.v. via HDMI.
B. Most new HD t.v.'s have a specific HDMI or DVI to HDMI connection for computers. On my Samsung it is the HDMI 4 imput that is for pc's. Make sure you are using the right HDMI connection. [your t.v. manual has that info and it may say pc port on the back of your t.v above one of your HDMI connections.
C. Using your t.v.'s remote, go to source, select your t.v.'s HDMI connection that is for pc's. select tools, then select "Edit Name". You will have several options, choose pc! Once you edit the name of the HDMI connection to pc, all images will now fit the screen without having to adjust your Res. You can now play Tomb Raider and it as will all games, fit your screen.
* Doing this may seem silly, but thats the way the newer t.v.'s work when hooking up a pc via HDMI.
** I play all games at 1080p and it works great once you rename the input to pc.
EDIT: And yes it is 1080P rez now.
EDIT 2 : Turning off exclusive fullscreen does it.
