AMD TressFX performance issues?
My pc should be able to run this game on Ultra easily, with a consistent fps well above 30, but whenever I turn AMD TressFX hair physics on, the framerate starts to dip unpredictably below 30, especially during cutscenes. Is this because I have an NVidia graphics card? AMD TressFX is AMD's technology after all, so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work that well with NVidia's drivers. Or is it that my processor just isn't being powerful enough to run TressFX smoothly? I have 8gb of 1600mhz RAM, so it can't be that. In short: AMD TressFX causes framerate issues to me. Is it because of my GPU (GeForce gtx660 windforce 2x oc) or CPU (AMD FX-6300)? Thanks.

It's very demanding option. Just turn it off since you won't notice much difference. Your specs are fine.

Yes, I just read an optimization guide. It seems that I could be able to leave TressFX on, but that would require me to lower everything else so much that the game would look better on a console! And that's something I will not tolerate.

Yeah just turn it off, you won't notice difference.

I would also recommend you to use benchmark and then play with settings so you can see min fps. Lowering some settings like AA or shadows won't change your graphic much and you will see fps boost. Or just leave it like that if it's fine to you.

TressFX hair rendering just makes Lara much more beautiful, making her hair look like on PS4, but with a better face than that on PS4. Nothing more than that.
it's however a very demanding option.
I mean, I have CPU i5-3470 (worst than yours in many things) + GTX 970 (waaaay better than yours), and whenever hair movement is involved fps drops to 30... and the only way to avoid it without disabling other things is suppressing shadows and anti-alias :D
So yeah disable TressFX but I'd consider some upgrading there anyway if I was you.

I wasn't really looking for information on what to upgrade in my pc, but thanks anyway. I've been testing the settings and such during the day and I've come to the conclusion that TressFX isn't really worth the performance drop it gives me. It's beautiful, I love how realistic and good it looks, but simply turning it off doubled my fps. Thanks for all the replies.

Tomb Raider game is from 2013 but the upcoming games are becomming more demanding than before it is okay to use minimum settings but you will not get the best out of it
The good thing about the PC is that you can always upgrade it gives you a great freedom
You are not waisting your money but fulfilling your expectations
It is your choice and good luck with that gtx-660 but please do not blame my favorite game but your GTX-660

Here is a link how others like you are suffering low settings and 45fps the game is as if it looked like the developers ported a horrible PC port
30fps is for consoles there is a reason why the PC is called PC master race

I'm not blaming Tomb Raider for this. I know very well my graphics card isn't the best possible one to have at the moment. I maxed everything out, and left TressFX off and got an average fps of 71, minimum never going below 66 (according to the game's own benchmarking anyway). I think I'll just play it like this. And about upgrading: it's not as simple for me as it sounds. I have to buy a decent motherborad before I start to look into other parts. The motherboard I'm using right now is a budget-bought piece of ♥♥♥♥. I need to afford a good motherboard before upgrading anything else. But please, I'm not looking for upgrading tips. My original question was already answered.

I am not forcing you to upgrade but whenever people discuss issues with games that means there is probably 95% hardware issues or driver related and when you your self aware of of the
answer you would get ( You have to upgrade )
There is no shame in it if your budget is low it is not your fault but please do not get angry when i criticizes your system
You where looking for solution and that was without Tress fx okay your choice

anyway, AMD GPUs seemed to be perform TressFx better than NVidia back when it was introduced. Things changed over the years -- NVidia fixed a few things -- but honestly dunno how much :)

I wasn't angry at you. I don't get angry when people talk with me about my pc. If it was the swearing that made me seem angry, I'm sorry. It's just a bad habit that I have.

I'll give it a shot with my AMD 7870. I have the same amount of RAM and same processor as you, so we'll see if it is because you have an Nvidia graphics card.

M8.... Try playing a game with 10 FPS. It is unbearable. Also, those used to 60 or 120 FPS start to not like 30 FPS. Trust me, FPS matters. Internet lag is something completely different. FPS lag means stuttering, laggy stuttering movements, making the game just as unplayable as 200 ping can, but in a different way.
