Tomb Raider series order?
I got this game along with others in the summer sale and was wondering if there was an order to play them in.

This is a reboot. A prequel. But actually it's a different game from the previous installments. They completely revamped the series.

Look, I like ALL Tomb Raider games from the very first one on, but I would recommend playing "Legend", "Anniversary" and "Underworld" first and only then play Tomb Raider 2013. Those three are related story-wise and are also the last games in the previous franchise. "Anniversary" is a remake of the original (the very first ever) Tomb Raider game, so maybe you would want to do it first of those three, but keep in mind that "Legend" is a slightly older game.

As far as Tomb Raider 2013 goes - as seanwc101 says - it is a reboot, a total rethinking of the original character and her storyline. They have eliminated the old Lara Croft's history and started from scratch. That's why I would play the others first. However, having said that, since it's a reboot, you may actually want to play it first, because you don't yet know the character and her history, and that's what this game is about: getting to know Lara Croft.

For me personally, it doesn't really matter where you start, but if I had to choose from the four I give here, I'd say either "Legend" (the old Lara) or "Tomb Raider 2013" (the brand new Lara). Also keep in mind that the old Lara was a one-dimentional mucho chick, a bit of a female Rambo, who showed about as much emotion as a character from an arcade-style game, whereas the new Lara Croft (Tomb Raider 2013) is a multi-dimentional character, meaning that she is way more realistically portrayed as a human being. She experiences pain and uncertainty and sorrow. She gets frightened and she cries. But throughout the game you will see her grow in confidence and skills, and you will experience why this happens as she fights to stay alive and lose friends along the way. Enough said.

I hope this was helpful. (Maybe you could post for us what games you got.)

Play the old ones, get refund for this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. They not only butchered Lara as a character but removed every good gameplay aspect that was signature to the series. This is not a Tomb Raider game. This is more of an Uncharted rip-off with really weird BDSM undertones

Considering Uncharted is a favorite of mine, I was happy to see this game become very similiar. However, I believe it's better Uncharted series.

As far as the group who prefer the old sytle and less fighting/killing I respect that and I think there should be an option when choosing difficulty that sets the amount of fighting vs amount of puzzles and even the difficulty of puzzles. I think Uncharted 3 did difficulty of puzzles.

As far as which game to play first it depends on how much time you have and what you like. If you want Uncharted, don't have much time, and modern gfx go with 2013. If you have plenty of time to beat all of these games play the old ones first as described above.

I just think the puzzle crowd/fan of old games need to not be hostile and just say the game is not for them but can understand others (9million copies) do like it.

Uncharted IS a good game, I like it. But this game is a clone of uncharted. Squere Enix have been raping every franchise thus far in recent years. This game is not a Tomb Raider game, which is my point. They just cobbled together a monster out of 'popular' game designs and mechanics, which makes this game overly generic ans soulles.
Here is what the devs were making before Square told them to make it "mainstream": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbJjcBC2rnc

Notice how the game (even so early in the development cycle) had much more mechanics and adventure than the whole of the '13 abomination.
Completely agree with the above comment. TR has no real identity. It borrowed heavily from mechanics across the board from everything else. It tries to emulate Uncharted to the extent that it feels like a cheap parody at times and you can evidently see from the recent ROTTR gameplay online (look up Siberia snow gameplay on Youtube) that they're still very uncreative with repetitive forumlaic gameplay designed that doesn't seem to be evolving like they promised.

I wish they'd tone they game down and bring it back to it's more lighthearted roots. A lot of series' take themselves so seriously that it just burns the series out so fast as they can't figure of the next "big bad" or "ultra gritty realistic" element for the characters to face due to the imaginative limitations they set up for the world so quickly. I fear that Crystal's persistence with a "gritty grounded world" will only dig the grave deeper for this franchise in the long run and it's already obvious when most of the game's story right now is focused on some sort of "Evil" Corporate conspiracy who are out to get Lara and the artifacts she's after. They've only just begun and they're already hitting out with the generic clichés. I can only imagine Crystal rehashing this type of storyline.

If you're going to refer to the "old Lara", you're already getting it wrong by referring to Tomb Raider: Legend, as she isn't the original Lara Croft. Although, Legend Lara is much closer versus Reboot Lara, so close enough, I suppose.

Anyway, let me move on to my point by saying that I can't stand the idealogy that the OLD Lara Croft (especially, Legend, Anniversary and Underworld's version) is a flat character with no emotional response to things. She's shown a lot of emotion, especially during the storyline of Legend and Underworld where Lara Croft seeks out the whereabouts of her mother, you can't really craft a narrative with the goal being so close to Lara's heart without her actually expressing some sort of emotional connection to that person. Not everyone has to visibly sob and need a pat on the back to be "human", not everyone is like that. Lara Croft was experienced and confident in her abilities.

Great game. Of other's only cared for first one (ps1 or Sega I think), all others were just same thing over and over, it needed a change.

Sorry for taking so long, I had a busy weekend.

So I got
Lara Croft and the Guardian of the Light
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider 1
" 2
" 3: adventures of Lara Croft
"The Last Revelation
"Chronicles
" (VI): The Angle of Darkness
"Anniversary
"Legend
"Underworld

I have Tomb Raider on XBox so I already started it on here too. I just wasn't sure if the games built off of each other or if it was like final fantasy where most of them are completely separate. And yes that was helpful Henrimagne

you play the old ( core design ) games in order , because TR 2 assumes you know what happened in the first game etc.
so you play
TR1
TR2
TR3
TR revelations
TR chronicles
Angel of darkness

This is for the purists though .If you like the new ( Crystal dynamics ) games better I always suggest to play
TR Anniversary first ( why? because that tells you a lot what all the fuss with the original games was about > tomb exploring and puzzles )
then TR legend and finally Underworld .The last one goes back ,to large extent , to the original ideas of the franchise : huge explorable areas with puzzles ,i.e. tombs .

the rebooted Tomb Raider ( 2013) completely abandons the original franchise and starts fresh .So that's easy :)
only one game sofar ...

I sure hope the new one will feature MORE tombs and LESS combat though. It's one thing to take a fresh approach but quite another to ignore the appeal of the original games .But the reboot was in all other respects a fantastic game ( I'd even say it's one of the best games ever, not just in the Tomb Raider series but overall)

to someone saying "old Lara Croft " when talking about TR legend , anniversary : that's wrong ..that's NEW Lara Croft . The original persona was created by Core design , Crystal dynamics only took over starting with TR legend . It's quite interesting, and fun, to play the old ones on dos-box ( think you can get them real cheap on GoG) because the basic strength of the gameplay is still apparent .

worst game of entire franchise - most fans agree on that - is Angel of darkness ,because of the dodgy controls and camera . All others are very good games .

I only played the new one and I did fine. Tomb Raider Reboot was the only one I played so far, and I understood everything, so I don't think you'll have any problems.

You understood everything because this is a reboot. This game has nothing to do with the old ones besides the series name being slapped on to sell

this game is telling the story of lara croft when she first tomb raided, it is a amaizing game even better when all settings are on max & 3D on a 50in tv, lara can sometime come out of the screen a few feet away from you:tokitori:
Packetstorm Jul 4, 2015 @ 6:59am
Exactly, and the reboot has everything to do with the old series since it's a prequel ,and therefore become canonical in TR universe.
