Disable distracting box around subtitles?

Gonna start off with that my hearing is kind of bad. I always turn subtitles on otherwise I can't make out what they're saying most of the time. I'd like to be able to fully experience the games story however the subtitles have this absolutely distracting and hideous black box around em. It's absolutely unnecessary as the subs are a contrasting color already in a bold font. It's just this massive black rectangle that blocks out a shockingly large portion at the bottom of the screen.

Is there any way to remove this or am I just gonna not be able to fully experience the story? I'm definitely not playing the game with it on if there's no work around, it's absolutely intolerable.
