You need to play in 1024x768 (this is not sarcasm or a joke). Your GPU can not handle resolutions higher then that with more than 20 fps.
http://www.notebookcheck.com/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-750M.90228.0.html
(scroll down) your GPU is not suitable for playing recent games, or even play anything in Full HD really. It is just catchy so that Apple can sell you crap for lots of money. (because "we sell you a high-end super duper white laptop with a dedicated graphics card")
Yet what startles me: why turn off your laptop for a few hours? In case it's heat you need to make sure your GPU's cooling is ok. Otherwise your system will cut it's power to prevent heat damage which in return results in such low fps as you observed above.
To all the Mac haters: yes I know my computer is not made for videogames, Windows and Direct X are better for them. But if a game is sold on Steam as Mac compatible, I expect it to be Mac compatible. End of the argument.
In fact: if you don't own a Mac yourselves, why are you even posting here?
You can blame whomever you want but truth be told it is the hardware not steams fault, the game will play perfectly fine on a MAC at solid FPS with deceint hardware.
Since you were so kind to look at my thread, I'd like to say thank you to all of you at Feral Interactive for the amazing work you are doing converting for Mac all my favourite games - Batman, Deus Ex, XCOM, and now Tomb Raider. Keep up the good work!
Good to hear you've sorted those graphics out :)
And no worries! Keep playing them and we'll keep porting them.
