Terrible fps rate on Mac
I am playing Tomb Raider on Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks with a i7 2.3 GHz processor, 16GB RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB. After lowering all graphic options to the minimum I ran the benchmark and I got an average of 12 fps. This is terrible and it's affecting gameplay immensely. Any way this can be improved?

Hi, at what resolution are you playing it?!

I wonder what is going on in peoples heads when they come here with a MAC with the most crappy mobile GPU available complaining about "terrible fps rate on mac". The FPS you get is not terrible at all. It is absolutely apropriate for your bad PC. Be happy you get 12 FPS (assuming you are using Full HD resolution)

You need to play in 1024x768 (this is not sarcasm or a joke). Your GPU can not handle resolutions higher then that with more than 20 fps.

(scroll down) your GPU is not suitable for playing recent games, or even play anything in Full HD really. It is just catchy so that Apple can sell you crap for lots of money. (because "we sell you a high-end super duper white laptop with a dedicated graphics card")

I did the benchmark test after I had already lowered resolution down to 1024x768. With the laptop off for a few hours and restarting the game with a 800x600 res allowed me to reach an average 75 fps in the benchmark, I hope it'll stay that way while I play. I don't care much for fancy graphics but I feel like I'm back in 1996!

You should be able to go a bit higher than such low resolutions. It's true the 750m ain't that great a card but going with something like 1440x900 at "Medium" setting should be doable.

Yet what startles me: why turn off your laptop for a few hours? In case it's heat you need to make sure your GPU's cooling is ok. Otherwise your system will cut it's power to prevent heat damage which in return results in such low fps as you observed above.

I just happened to be away for a few hours and I always switch my computer off when I am away from it. All I was saying is that maybe when I was playing with low settings but still with the 1024x768 resolution my computer was still lagging behind from the high resolution I had just been playing with.

To all the Mac haters: yes I know my computer is not made for videogames, Windows and Direct X are better for them. But if a game is sold on Steam as Mac compatible, I expect it to be Mac compatible. End of the argument.

In fact: if you don't own a Mac yourselves, why are you even posting here?

It isnt a matter of the OS it is a matter of GPU "horsepower" that GPU under windowz would still perform like crap. It is midlevel 2013 MOBILE gpu.
You can blame whomever you want but truth be told it is the hardware not steams fault, the game will play perfectly fine on a MAC at solid FPS with deceint hardware.

Alright. When I bought this laptop in 2014 I was convinced it was the top of the line in the Mac family but I guess I was wrong. Thank you!

Thank you, but I have settled on playing in 800x600 resolution, which allows me to run the game smoothly even with "high" graphic settings. It's good enough for me.

Since you were so kind to look at my thread, I'd like to say thank you to all of you at Feral Interactive for the amazing work you are doing converting for Mac all my favourite games - Batman, Deus Ex, XCOM, and now Tomb Raider. Keep up the good work!

Good to hear you've sorted those graphics out :)

And no worries! Keep playing them and we'll keep porting them.
