Linux port
Hi Devs,
I've been playing Hitman on steam / windows7 for some time now. I'll be upgrading my PC soon and migrating to Ubuntu Linux. The only application I can't migrate is Hitman Absolution although apparently it can be made to work through Wine: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=289874

Does anyone know if future titles if any will be ported to steam / Linux ?

Just stick with windows, Linux isn't dominating in the OS market yet... but will

So Linux will get the support required to become a real OS? Because as of now, Linux is still a more niche/enthusiast OS. Until they can make it as simple to use and guarantee patching like WIndows it will never dominate the market.

That's one statistic. With Steam and OpenGL adoption rather than D3D, it will be much easier to port games to Linux. I've just installed a Win8.1/Ubuntu dual boot. I use the Ubuntu OS mainly and just boot windows for some games.

Just one statistic? Please show me another where Linux dominates the game market or where the majority of devs are using OpenGL. Because they aren't. Most are using DirectX.

Sure you can throw Android numbers into the mix, but that is not the same thing. We are talking about PC gaming, not watered down gaming.

OpenGL suffers from the same issues Linux does, in that since it is open source there is no guaranteed support or updating. OpenGL has fallen behind DirectX many times in feature sets. Sure it caught up but it needs to be competitive.

I am all for competition but honestly Linux is not competition to Windows. Until it is as easy to use (i.e. does not need terminal or SUDO commands to do certain things) it will always be what it has been. As well until it shows a financial gain for the companies it will never take off.

One thing as well is that as soon as Linux does become popular, it will start to be much like Windows in that all its holes will be shown and viruses will run rampant.

I sure loved reading the pure ignorance in this post. Linux is the operating system of freedom, and with that comes a little bit of complexity. If you want ease of use go with Debian and GNOME or just install Ubuntu. As far as "patching", updates are usually though the distribution. It really depends on what package manager you're using and if you're using official repositories. For the most part "patching" shouldn't be an issue.

VIRUSES YOU SAY? Sudo puts a stop to that. You need to run with root privileges to do anything really destructive, so viruses are hard to come by on Linux unless the user is a complete tool.

On OpenGL, more games use OpenGL than DirectX. There's a very good reason for this too. Many game engines support both OpenGL and DirectX, opting for DirectX when available (Windows only) and OpenGL otherwise (everywhere else). OpenGL is not "open source", the specification is open source. Vendors (To put this into simple terms, "the people who make drivers") implement the specification with their extensions. Being open source has absolutely nothing to do with updates, but open source projects are more frequently updated than most proprietary products because anyone can contribute in many situations, and with most licensing the project can be forked (Simple terms again, "copied") and released by another individual or group.

On the use of the terminal in Linux, the terminal is just as important (if neglected) on Windows! If you don't like using the terminal refer to my suggestion of Debian and GNOME or Ubuntu.
