I agree the difficulty levels are a bit strange though it's not something very straightforward to balance either.
At the highest difficulty level knowing maps like the back of your hand isn't really an odd requirement.
Honestly my problem with absolution is that it's so linear that I didn't enjoy a lot of it by default, I played through the first time on normal just to get it over with and see the story line. There's a few memorable moments but most of it is bleh
I played again on purist just to prove I could, purist was not fun (for me)
If you liked Blood Money you will probably like the newer games better than Absolution. If you are finding hard to be easy, just finish on hard so you see the story line and learn the maps. If you still feel a compulsion to replay it, you'll have the understanding you need to push through purist
They are not a reboot, all games are canon
They are also mostly irrelevant, no old games have had any important story line carry over between them (with the sole exception of contracts into blood money which was because they broke up blood money's original story into 2 games)
Only the two new games have relevant story between them (and so much so that Hitman 2 actually contains all of Hitman (2016)'s included as a legacy pack so you can play them inside the same launcher remastered)
If it wasn't for marketing nonsense by Square the names would not be so misleading. Hitman (2016) was Hitman number 6 but as they were converting to an online format with monthly releases it was fully named: Hitman Season 1
Hitman 2 is more accurately Hitman Season 2 but is the 7th game in the story line
They don't use the word "season" in the name anymore because they get more backlash from fans over that than anything else, the fanbase is a bunch of whiny babies
Hitman (season) 2 is game number 7 and continues the story of the franchise as expected but continues to have seasonal (monthly) content releases, the fan base just likes to stick fingers in their ears and act like the game doesn't get constant monthly content over the course of the new season (Hitman (2016) had monthly content releases as well, over its season)
The biggest structure change is that with Hitman season 1 it the releases included full size episodes, but due to complaints Hitman season 2 presents all of its main missions at release and its smaller content that comes out monthly
Some people play the prologue and assume the game is a reboot without bothering to pay any attention to the montage at the end of the prologue or the dates for the actual season campaigns
Hitman Prologue: year 1999 does take place before the other games, but it's also just an intro. It ends with a montage that actually shows the other games (all of them) take place and with a narrator who talks about how he's known about 47 for all of his life and years working
Season 1's campaign starts 20 years later in 2019 after all of those missions you were just shown from the other games, the narrator is the shadow client, 47 and Diana think they are just doing regular contracts but come to find out they were all connected, you were being played by a shadow client, the narrator who is using you to draw out his own targets and is killing people made vulnerable due to 47's actions. You also end season 1 by killing an ICA manager that betrays the ICA, someone who did not like 47 during the prologue, so the story is mostly self contained
Season 2's campaign continues directly branching from those events and goes on to show you who the shadow client was and why he's known about 47, the events tie in to before the games and are covered more by the comic books of 47's early life
In relation the season 1 and 2 story lines wrap around the older games which end up mostly being just "47 at work" aside from absolution which is some personal agenda mission by Diana to protect the clone girl and shut down the rogue ICA manager who is performing unauthorized activity ~ after absolution it's back to work as normal and none of that garbage matters Diana is very much alive at the end of absolution, having faked her death, all the absolution story lines are wrapped up with the rogue ICA teams dead and the unauthorized clone program shut down
Only people who don't pay the slightest attention to the prologue montage will pretend that the new games are a reboot
The only thing retconned is 47's appearance which the devs admitted should not have been so old for absolution, his clone genetics allow him to appear to be in his 40's instead of his 50's and his health is of a man in his prime 20's
