External Hard Drive
Is it okay to have an external hard drive to put your games on so you can play them on other computers while keeping your games on your main computer?

Just make sure you use a fast interface like USB 3.0 or eSATA and you will be fine. If you hook up with something like USB 2.0 you're definitely may hit a bottleneck on loading times and such. I run games off an eSATA drive and notice no difference in performance from running off my 7200rpm internal.

Use Steam BackUp

Why would you use Steam Backup? He's asking about actually playing the games, not archiving them.

I would install steam to that external harddrive. You're going to want to use USB3.0 or esata so that you don't get a bandwidth bottleneck.

1. Exit steam.
2. Copy the Steam.exe (not the shortcut) from your current Steam install folder to another folder you want it installed to on that drive.
3. run the exe and when it finishes installing log into your account normally.
4. Download the game and see if it works.

Okay so if I copied my steam folder from Program Files x 86 it would work when i plugged it into another computer? I would need to downlaod some etra files into the computers registry before playing right? I wont get vac banned or anything like that?

I would follow my steps so that the folder all has the correct paths for any linked files. You should be fine VAC wise I think as long as you don't run hax. The only thing to worry about is non-cloud saves might go on the boot drive.

yes it would work perfectly fine as a external hdd is read like a internal 1 and as long as your not trying toget a friends pc to run the game via this way , because it wont work (trust me)
but yes you can use it to take with you and run on othr pcs. ut you will constantly have to change your settings for the game as all pcs are diffrent
