what game should i play first, alans wake or alans wake american nightmare?

I say play Alans wake first.

Alan Wake is the very first game in the series, so you should play that one first. American Nightmare is a standalone game that has nothing to do with the first one, however, playing the first game will give you a better understanding of what's going on in American Nightmare. Bear in mind that the events of American Nightmare are non-canon and are completely unrelated to the main game. Enjoy both of them! :)

but yeah there wouldnt be a alan wake american nightmere without alan wake 1. without saying to much, the story is completely linked. but yes agreed SPOILERS*** the events of nightmere DO NOT matter and are irrelivant for sure***SPOILERS END

Definitely play Alan Wake first. Like MarurabaATX said, American Nightmare is strongly linked to Alan Wake. In fact, playing American Nightmare by itself without knowing Alan Wake is a bad idea, because it wouldn't make any sense to you that way.

As for that SPOILER, I think it's open for interpretation unless there's an Alan Wake 2. :)
