Oh.. thanks! I thought there was some permanent "teleport back to base" key like in MOBAs.. i guess you really need to purchase a scroll to teleport then

This IS a MOBA though. This isn't the only MOBA to do this. Also, Teleport Scrolls can teleport you to the front lines too, if need be, for instance if you just died and still got that scroll on you, you can tele to the closest allied tower or fort to the frontlines.

That was just my way of saying "there is no permanent tele back". Of course Teleport scroll has more uses, going back to action (especially after you died) is the most common but sometimes you also want to join an attack or the defense of a structure that is going to fall.
The cost is prohibitive in the early game, though. Late game it becomes a necessity.

yeah. i don't like that you have to buy a consumable to be able to teleport. i'm more used to LOL's permanent teleport key :(

Well, permanent teleport alters the way you play heavily. I actially prefer it with consumeables because it adds an strategic element. It matters a lot how you spend your gold and the value of a teleport is very hard to measure.
For example, if each player got teleport whenever he wants it would mean that all you need is to capture something like a tower deep into enemy territory and the entire team can follow up. If that doesn't come with a cost this kind of maneuver will be the standard and parts of the map will always be circumvented.
Also, going back to base takes some time, so you can't repelnish mana and hp williy-nilly. This makes items with hp/mana regeneration more useful etc. Oh and don't you hate it when opponents just teleport to safety after you worked so hard and got them down to a couple of hundred HP?
