Can't start the game.
I simply can't start the game. When i press the 'play' button, the screen just turns black, and nothing happens. The game was running, but yeah. I had to force crash the game. Anyone else got the same issue? Anyone knows how to fix it?

Hey, If anyone has this problem. go to [/mydocuments/mygames/galciv2/prefs] edit the screen resolution width and height by hand to operate at your screen resolution. also go to any expansions and edit their preferences to match. I hope this helps everyone else who got no help from the online community. Good Luck and happy gaming!

I tried that, and know nothing happens when i click on ♥♥♥♥ in the game. I even tried to reinstall the game. I don't even know what's going on anymore.
I was having the same problem. I am running windows 8, all I did was run the compatibility troubleshooter and now mine works fine.

What is that? How do you run it?

Same problem here, can't validate the serial number
If you installed the game in the default location it should be here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition

Right click on GC2Launch, click on Properties, then go to the Compatibility tab, the button is towards the top of the window, it says Run Compatibility Troubleshooter

I managed to fix my problem. Impulse was using Internet Explorer proxy information by default. I fixed this by opening Internet Explorer and changing the privacy setting in "Internet Options" in the Tools menu to "accept all cookies". This allowed Impulse to run the game with no problems. I would post this in a more suitable location for anyone experiencing a problem similar to mine, but I'm new to this site and don't know where that would be. If anyone can forward this information to a more convenient post, that would be great.

I had the same problem and the solution by fatcat5853 @ 3 Sep, 2013 @ 4:12pm fixed it. It was just the resolution that needed to be set manually in the prefs.ini file. :steamhappy:
