Community Update (Unofficial game patch)
The Community Update
V6.0.2

Hello everyone,

A few months ago a group of modders put their heads together and got to work with one single goal: 'fix' everything. After months of testing, tweaking and optimizing we are proud to reveal the Community Update.

The Community Update features:
  • Vastly improved AI research
  • Vastly improved AI planetary management
  • Re-balanced weapons
  • Re-balanced defenses
  • Re-balanced abilities
  • Re-balanced techtrade
  • Lore friendly new tech and improvement descriptions
  • Better custom races.
  • A 100+ page manual written from scratch
  • Fully working AI's thanks to an unofficial update to the EXE

Everything you need can be downloaded from the file archive[www.dropbox.com]. But you might want to decide on an installation method first.

Installing the Community Update can be done two in ways. The easy way, using my custom build installer (CUFI). The hard way, where you unzip and configure the game by hand.

The easy way:
  • Download CUFI.EXE
  • Run it
  • Click "Install"
  • Wait for the installer to extract the mod and configure your game.
  • Play

The hard way:
  • Download Community Update V6.0.2.zip
  • Download Twilight of the Arnor.EXE v2.042.ZIP

After downloading I recommend you watch this movie The movie is a step-by-step explanation how to install a mod for Galactic Civilization 2: Twilight of the Arnor or the Ultimate Edition.

Step-by-step CU installation.
Step 1, the mod:
  • Extract Community Update V6.0.2.zip to a folder of your choice.
  • Go to My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor
  • Remove or backup and files ending with RACECONFIGXML
  • Backup Prefs.ini
  • Open Prefs.ini
  • Look for an entry named EnableMods and set it to 1
  • Look for an entry named ModsDir and set it to the folder where you extracted Community Update V6.0.2.zip
  • Save Prefs.ini

Step 2, the EXE:
  • Extract the EXE from the ZIP file.
  • Locate your original EXE file. You can do this by searching your hard drive(s) for GC2TwilightOfTheArnor.EXE
  • Make a back-up of your original EXE file.
  • Copy the EXE file from the ZIP archive over your original EXE file.
  • Windows will asks you to confirm an overwrite action. Confirm it.
  • Done.

The new EXE file has the same name as the old one. Your shortcuts will work.

Does it include bug fixes?

Any chance this will come via Steam? If not, do I really only need to download CUFI.EXE? Or all the other stuff as well? In which directory do I put it, when I have the Steam version? Or would any directory on my harddisk work? If it is really just the exe to download, will virus checkers let it pass? Some are running wild lately when an install program wants to download stuff ...

I think Stardock has plans on releasing it on steam but I haven't heard anything from them as of late.

You *do not* need to use CUFI to install the Community Update, it is just a tool I made to make everyone's life easier. I completely under your (or anyone's) hesitation to use it though that's why manual installation instructions are included and available l on the download site.

If you have the steam version of the game your install directory will be different. Usually steam games are installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common. That's where you'll find Galciv 2: Ultimate if you have the steam version.

The EXE should pass any virus scan but it MUST be placed in the right folder.

Hi there :). I am Altarn and I made APT1. This may sound odd but the CU isn't a mod in the strictest sense of the word, it truly is a communal effort to fix the game and turn it into what it should have been. Not only that, the AIs in the CU are actually fixed, not worked around like in APT1 (and every other mod that tries to fix the game).

Choices aplenty, I'd pick the CU though :)
Guys, thanks for the patch!!! I have the Ultimate Edition and I'm not sure this is compatible with it. Also, I've seen in the file repository that CUFI.exe is way smaller to other files. Should I only download CUFI? Is it really enough to get the Steam version patched or should I also download the other files?

Thanks guys!!

Try it on tough :) it's way tougher once the AI gets some decent resources. I used to beat the game at crippling, now I can''t.

Sweet thing, is this compatible with the GalCiv2 release on GOG.com (out today)?

The GOG version should be compatible but you don't need the new EXE.

You don't need a link, right click the game in your library and switch over to the new branch to get the community patches.

switch over to the new branch? .... what exactly does that mean?

Go to the game, click properties, under the beta tab switch to the community patch.

You don't need to manually install this patch, they made it something you can opt into.
