There is an option when creating a new game to toggle "Mega Events" on or off. Turn that off. All of the Mega Events are very extreme and in my experience often game breaking. I don't like them at all.
On the other hand there is a slider on the right for "Likelihood of Random Events". These regular random events on this slider are far less extreme and I've found them very enjoyable to shake things up slightly every now and then. I usually have that slider at "Rare" so they happen only once or twice in a game.
For your current game with Mega Events enabled you would have to load a save prior to the Dread Lords appearing and hope that particular Mega Event doesn't happen again.
I once had the Altarians get one, and I was like ok, that's nice, they're losing their war so they can now put up a fight. But then I got into war and they gave me some ships to help, among them the PreCursor Ranger, it felt so cheap to totally wreck the Arceans with one ship so I disbanded it after a few turns.
