Orcs Must Die! 3 is multiplayer-only, free-to-play

Part 3 is called Orcs Must Die! Unchained. It's a free-to-play multiplayer game with lanes, minions, heroes and all that stuff from Dota and LoL. There will be booster packs to buy and a founder's program - 150 euros gets you instant alpha access. German website PC Games has the scoop including some pictures and a first trailer.

If OMDU doesn't pull in as much money as they hope they'll go back to what worked in the past. F2P models can be VERY lucrative, so I don't blame them for trying. I think this is an honest attempt to making the game more competitive and support more players w/o feeling cheap.. although I wouldn't have mind a game like OMD2 with 4 player support all on the same side fighting of tons of orcs! But I'm also not very competitive, I don't like PvP stuff in general, usually it's co-op or nothing. Maybe if they do well anyways it will help fund a really great OMD3 someday! Yay optimism!

I feel like ^this is the part Robot didn't quite understand. There are hundreds of PvP shooters to choose from if you like that sort of thing. The dedicated co-op games are harder to come by, that's why the game attracted rabid fans like me. Some of us loved OMD2 primarily because of the co-op aspect. Without it, there's no reason for me to even try Unchained.

In times like these I'm glad there's a lot of indie developers putting out some neat games to play. Might be worth to seek out some new company to support, ya know? =)

Does ANYONE know of any other OMD2-type games out there? The only other one I can think of is Sanctum 2, which is pretty good and up to 4 players. =) It goes on sale fairly often, usually between $5 and $10 or so. But that 4-pack is SO worth it when on sale. ^_^

The Sanctum series is really good indeed, you can usually get it for cheap, so go ahead and buy it. Dungeon Defenders is also another contender I suppose.

As for OMD3, I'm a more afraid about the free-to-play tag than the MOBA tag.
If it's basically OMD gameplay but PvP, it sounds really good, I'd just rather just pay for it and get a good game, than a f2p game that forces you to grind or pay, like most of the f2p that are released these days (with a few exceptions).
The new Dungeon Defenders is already heading that way (app game, cash shop), and I don't like that.

Yeah, DD was pretty good. I sunk lots of time in to that game though I felt like I hit a wall where I couldn't really advance anymore. o.o; I have mixed feelings on the changes to DD overall, but I hope DD2 will be worth it. As long as they keep the pay-for items vanity only then it should be fine. I don't like it when there are 'boosters' and stuff, that's pay 2 win by definition, but there are viable opinions that support it too. [shrugs]

Always online is an annoying change, though. I mean.. I understand why they did it (so many cheaters, omg) but still doesn't change that it sucks requiring internet to play. What if your connection goes down in the middle of a game? Is it Ubisoft level of DRM where the game stops right there? That would really be annoying. They better not do that. XD

Check out Sanctum 2 and Dungeon Defenders, they're both of the same vein. =)

The Magicka FTP turned out pretty terrible. I hope this has a true coop mode, and a ranking system for versus! Otherwise, it will just be a rape and pillage.
