1) crossbow with mana regeneration by headshot
2) trap reset trinket
3) tar with extra-glue
4) grinders with fast-reset
5) arrow walls with fire
6) barricades with self-repair
For solo play add the following (all items fully upgraded):
7) guardian trinket (...if you have the dlc that brings it - otherwise: health trinket)
8) archers with fire (...if you have the guardian trinket - otherwise: with health regeneration)
9) electric zappers
10) ice weapon
11) void wall with skeletons and coin drop
12) spring trap which knocks heavies
I've played with a guy who uses almost no traps except Mana Wells, then plays it as an FPS shooter, killing everything himself with his always-charged mana weapons.
That said, these are on my toolbar most often:
-Crossbow with headshots-return-mana
-Lightning Ring
-Mana Trinket
-Tar
-Arrow Walls with place-on-ceiling upgrade
-Grinder
-Scorchers (2 traps in 1 - burns and acts as mini-Spring Trap to flip stuff into lava/acid/cliff)
-Haymakers
Map specific:
-Void Wall with zombie skeletons upgrade
-Spring Traps with "flips heavies" upgrade
-Spike Wall (big swinging DLC trap)
-Push Traps
-Wind Belt
I find the Stone Staff to be the best *all-around* weapon, deadly in the hands of a beginner or expert. It's also a great training weapon as it teaches you how to run into a group of orcs for the AoE attack, then jump back out without taking too much damage.
If you're going Crossbow may I offer some advice?
-Headshots are easier to make the father away you are.
-Up close, hold down mouse button for shotgun-like rapid fire
-Use Stun *one shot at at time* - don't blow all your mana firing off multiple Stuns at once, there's no point.
-Stun-lock large enemies with Stun-headshot-headshot-Stun-headshot-headshot-Stun, etc. With headshots-return-mana upgrade you can lock down an entire lane of Ogres forever.
