Dark and Darker

CPU degradation
Let me preface, I bought all new hardware back in March. So i've been only using this hardware for a few months. Yet my PC had constant crashing ever since Thursday, last week. (i only recently fixed my computer, yesterday) and the fix was the CPU, it was somehow malfunctioning (I tested every other part, replacing it and testing, until I discovered / got to the CPU)

The ONLY thing I have done recently, from Thursday, in terms of hardware or software, was install and play Dark and Darker.

Now I am not decrying Dark and Darker saying that the devs are purposely causing CPU's or hardware to break - although I would definitely say it's worth noting.

Could it have been just random, due to use, or just a part malfunctioning on it's own? Yes.
But seeing as the only NEW thing i've done, recently, was install and play Dark and Darker. I would love to dive deeper in this and find out more if anyone can shed light.

What does Dark and Darker do that other developers do not? What EXACTLY runs during the process when you play Dark and Darker? Again, not sitting here saying the devs are responsible for breaking my CPU. I have no idea what exactly caused it, minus the fact that this was the only thing I did that was new since last Thursday/around that time frame.

I doubt I have any error logging since I had to do a clean install of Windows. :Lee:

If you bought Intel, then CPU degradation is an issue on the higher tier CPUs.

Software won't degrade your PC, atleast not this quickly, as it normally takes YEARS of hard usage.

Does this happen in unreal engine games by any chance ?

Well this happened with Dark and Darker and I work a full time job. It happened Thursday, so anything recent from the past day or two i would include, but the only game i played from a couple nights ago until the crashing happened, was Dark and Darker.

Again not sure if the two are related. But I don't want to cause anything bad to happen to my CPU again.

Did you build this yourself or had it professionally built?

its the gpu, exiting dx12 games will somehow maintain max clock speeds. On many cards.
13900 14900 aside, cpus although being the only one susceptible to static damage, are almost impossile to kill without a hammer.

well im getting another replacement this week (cpu - upgrade) so im gonna test this CPU and see what happens

Yeah sure so it doesn't destroy my 4th gen i7 but it cooks yours right? It must be Dark and Darker for sure.

Faulty component(s) or user error, games don't destroy hardware

Not the game for sure, remove ur ram clean the ram and slots on the motherboard, unplug and plug cpu cable, do the same for the huge motherboard cable, again same for gpu, and also the psu power cable just to be sure.

Also check temps, ur temps might have been lower before, its easier to cool pc when temp outside is cold vs when its hot.

My pc would turn of instantly by slightly fking taping the table... I had it for over 3 years and it never happened, i reconected everything and its perfect.

Pcs are an anoying thing cuz its not about if they will have problems but when 😅

This is conspiracy theory level of cope.

99% sure this is a hardware issue
CRXWNWRXITH Jun 19, 2024 @ 8:28pm
guess its just coincidence. but still more information the better.

I replaced every part inside the computer, minus the storage and GPU also, for what its worth. (Like i said, replacing the CPU did fix the issue as it turns out, the CPU was the culprit of the infinite crashing)

Maybe I did come in hot making the post, but let me dial it back down.

I imagine the CPU just ran into an error and became faulty.

Have you monitored what your system is doing while playing the game? If you're continuing to run into CPU problems, it might be your a motherboard issue.
CyanCatMan Jun 19, 2024 @ 9:17pm
There's gotta be some kinda connection with all these hardware issues cropping up.
Major Lee Ree Jun 19, 2024 @ 11:30pm
If your pc was properly turning it's self off when it crashed then it would have been because of your CPU over heating, sounds like a cooling or thermal paste issue.
Cirno Jun 20, 2024 @ 12:35am
There is currently an issue with Intel 13th and 14th gen i7 and i9 CPUs crashing in certain workloads. You can google "intel cpu instability motherboard bios" without the quotes and switch to the News tab instead of All. For example, here is one of the many articles on it[wccftech.com], which even mentions players complaining on Steam about games causing instability.

There is also a separate issue with Intel CPUs degrading and physically bending over time.
