"Until you fall" and "for honor" both have direction based melee combat, but one is a VR game and the other is a fighting game, so no dungeon crawlers sadly...
Right now is in Early Access and they are going to overhaul most of its systems but the pricing is very fair and I absolutely love the game!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/362490/Exanima/
Asks for a game similar to dark and darker and proceeds to link a completely different game in every aspect lol
Probably skyrim or kingdom come deliverance (this is more a medieval tale with no fantasy aspects).
Tainted Grail: fall of Avalon is interesting too, but still in early access (this is the more similar to the dark and darker tone)
Exanima fits.
Mortal Online II
Chivalry Medieval Warfare II
Mordhau
These are multiplayer games i think are the closest of DnD.
Also, if you enjoy melee combat then consider giving a chance to Mount and Blade Bannerlord and Bellwright.
We got Renown coming out "soon" that may interest you too.
Pax Dei could eventually be added to the list.
If you're looking for solo experience then we got Kingdom Come II and Avowed, soon to be released.
But only on EPIC STORE.
Seriously tho to people who picked up Dark and Darker for the PvE ... why?
The slower and more methodical yet still fairly free-form dungeon crawl really feels like it's a missing niche that is technically filled by Dark and Darker, which is a niche that I wish more devs would fill for the single player market.
Pretty much nailed it.
And for the record, I didn't pick up Dark and Darker for PvE. I enjoy both PvP and PvE aspects of games like this. Was just looking for another game of similar style to play alongside Dark and Darker.
As many others have commented elsewhere, if you made Dark and Darker into a co-op PvE game with a campaign...or even just 'beat the level, go to next level' gameplay it would be a big hit. They really got the aesthetics and feel combat down nice.
