It's way better later on with proper gear sets as it opens a lot of other options
Also something to consider, mobs have high magic res.
Very squishy, not that mobile, low damage without gear. It's not a great time for wizard. I'd suggest warlock if you want to solo only. And save wizarding time for trios or duos.
Like others have said wizard has a high skill ceiling especially solo, starting out you just might die alot but as you level and get new skills and learn how to play the wizard better you will improve. Yes, meditation is a must if solo.
But in the end you still have to do a lot more than pretty much anyone else to win a fight. Wizard's only real upside is that you can blow through PVE pretty easy with magic missiles in normals.
The spells you can choose in the spell memory spot are it, though with better gear you can memorize more of those spells
