How is solo wizard?
When I played in the demo a long time ago it seemed godawful to me. I'm usually not that bad at games, but trying to do a successful extraction was just not happening for me and I constantly felt incredibly weak and ineffective. I've heard someone say that it has a huge skill wall to get over when you're new but is okay once you've mastered it. But I wonder if it's even worth the effort.

decent if you use meditation and arcane projectiles + arcane feats even with crappy gear

It's way better later on with proper gear sets as it opens a lot of other options

Besides the high skill ceiling, wiz is the class that is much more gear dependent than others.
Also something to consider, mobs have high magic res.

It's really not very enjoyable solo play. Yes, it does get easier and you can extract and even get pvp kills, but for a long time you will struggle. There's too much downtime if you wanna keep slinging spells and very risky gameplay if you want to bonk people with your staff or cosplay as melee with crystal sword.

Very squishy, not that mobile, low damage without gear. It's not a great time for wizard. I'd suggest warlock if you want to solo only. And save wizarding time for trios or duos.

If you own the game (not goin the f2p) I would recommend start the game with a good solo gold farming class (most of the others); then with the shared stash feed you wizard some low level stuff too keep him under lvl 25 but that will make life easier.

Like others have said wizard has a high skill ceiling especially solo, starting out you just might die alot but as you level and get new skills and learn how to play the wizard better you will improve. Yes, meditation is a must if solo.

Wizard is certainly not great solo. You can play without meditation once you've got enough gear to go overload. Staff mastery + ignite does allow wizards to go bonk mode now and actually win melee engagements (especially if you soften them up with a spell or two as they close with you.)

But in the end you still have to do a lot more than pretty much anyone else to win a fight. Wizard's only real upside is that you can blow through PVE pretty easy with magic missiles in normals.

I just hit 20 as wiz and I'm wondering if you get any more spells as you progress or is the beginning set it?

The spells you can choose in the spell memory spot are it, though with better gear you can memorize more of those spells
