Stairs are static and you might always just remember where they are the fact they are on the map is only good for new players.

No thats demon stairs. takes you to the level below where demons reside.

Crypt stairs have blue torches, if the blue torches are off the extract is used or not opened yet, for goblin caves if its closed- its not active, if the rocks are at the top, its been used. Use your eyeballs.

Had that happen to me lol, it sucks, but it opens up the possibility of some sneaky bastard stealing it from under your nose when you're looting (which is absolutely what they want with invis potions and such)
