hammer gives you armor penetration and it applies when you parry riposte with the shield.
theres no piece of equipment thats completely useless, its just typically the user who doesn't know how to utilize them. a skill issue, respectfully.

That's why ANYONE who has played this game for nay period of time knows it.
Also there are an ABUNDANCE of serious issues with shields:
* Multiple PvE hits go through shields consistently, due to a de sync between the mobs swings, and the hit box. Unless you aim it PERFECTLY it will still go through, despite there being no reason too.
* Being "Too close" to your opponent will allow their swing to phase through your shield and hit you anyway, which is a serious problem.
I even have video evidence of it: https://streamable.com/cpquz1?src=player-page-share
* The link HandBanana posted is true, however, it's only mostly how to avoid these game breaking issues with shields.
Rule of thumb is.. Blocking is almost always pointless, and you're opening yourself up to getting memed anyway, overpowered in the recoil half the time making it pointless to have been blocking anyway, or getting a serious bug like above happening where you get hit regardless..
Too avoid all of that, just dodge, and learn how to dodge, or do whatever else does, grab a caster of some sort, or ranged items, and spam it non stop until you can go in to finish the opponent with 1 or 2 hits.
Which has been the meta for 2 years.
Welcome to Dark and Darker :)
This isn't some action rpg where they let you block / parry stuff late. You have to be early / careful with your timing. But, I do agree that IM really needs to fix the janky-ness.
Wrong. The shot went through my shield, because the hand phased through and he hit me with the hilt. You can block attacks by hitting their hilt and stopping the attack, which is what I was trying to do. I've done it many times.
The axe head was still way up in the air, when the hit happened.
(unless IM never fixed the Barb weapons always having a sweet spot all over the weapon.)
Although there's specific shield build with corresponding perks which makes it somewhat playable, but taking into consideration absolute trash hitboxes, it's still not really a great strategy.
...Against players it's basically asking to get your legs swiped.
He has been trying to convince himself of that lie for a while. He even made an entire thread where literally everyone told him he was wrong and he clearly got hit in the head because he didn't aim up at all. The funny part is he posted a video that disproves his own claims and he still refuses to admit he is wrong and keeps using his appeal to authority of time spent to try and prove he is right when he is objectively not.
