Dark and Darker

NOTICE: tavern "service" slows down your PC even when dark&darker is not running
For the last couple months I couldn't figure out why my system was running sluggish. I haven't played dark and darker for a couple weeks, then read that the "tavern anti-cheat" runs in the background, sucking up CPU cycles. I uninstalled the game and *voila* my other games run many times better.

Not sure what the hell tavern is doing but it certainly isn't good.

its a really bad anti-cheat. It's not extremely nefarious like some people make it out to be.....but its really bad. reason it makes your pc slow is because its going through every file on your pc and scraping them to see if there's any programs associated with cheating software that could effect the game.

as far as it effecting other games.....that's on you. its either your personal settings you have in place or something is outdated or not working properly.

It sucks the anti-cheat is terrible....it doesn't even work (it does...but not very well)....near the end of wipe people find cheaters so much more often because of the lower playercount.

Destiny 2 with Battle-eye is worse
Let It Die anti-cheat is also worse
i'm sure there's other games too.

at the end of it all tho....some of the claims people be saying aren't covered...aren't talked about and aren't known. someone said TavernWorker destroys your pc overtime....and while it could be true.....if it WAS that bad....there'd be more people talking about it or more coverage about it in general.

I just opened the task manager and didn't see any activity. Even when I’m in the game, this Tavern doesn’t even consume a percent... So I think that everything is very individual here...

Yah but it really shouldn't be using anything if you're not playing the game. Further, I found it was doing something with GPU/memory consumption when dark/darker isn't running. It slowed down my other games significantly. I have a 4070.

yeah. its a really bad anti-cheat. I think someone said its like "Kernel-level" but i think depending on the game its needed. In Dark & Darkers case its not needed. it could probably pass off with "Easy Anti-Cheat" but then there would be alot more cheaters.
a few weeks/months ago people on here were talking about how Tavernworker was giving False-negatives on trojan, so something is def conflicting somewhere.
I think im running like a GTX970 or GTX1060, i dont remember. i haven't noticed any changes with any other games i play, and some of them are more resource heavy than D&D.

OK but did you actually check your processes and see if it was running when the game wasn't after you read that?

no i did. thats how i found out personally. until people start in mass "why can't i play" or "why do i keep crashing" and the Anti-cheat being the direct result...me and alot of other people aren't going to have an issue with it or let it keep us from playing.
No one outside of a few people have an issue with it. I don't even think any of the streamers/youtubers have ever said anything about it (whether or not they care/know about it i have no idea, but if it was something serious there'd be more information about this or a statement somewhere).

Battle Eye Anti-cheat has banned people in the past for using clients that doesnt effect it.
a prolific youtuber a few years ago got banned off Destiny2 for using a Currency manipulation tool for an old civil war game (which you had to because it was an old-outed game), and he got either a perma-ban or a very heavy ban....even tho it had nothing to do with the game and the devs did nothing (unless they did, but i dont remember).

while it was a 1 time deal i think in Destiny's case, i've never heard of someone getting banned using software that had no ties to the game in the case of Dark & Darker.

I dont exactly remember Let It Dies anti-cheat....but i think it had something to do with you can never uninstall it....like there isnt a way too, or if there is, it isn't truly deleted off your pc.

it could honestly be personal bias or "cope". I play all 3. i personally have no issues with any of them. I also get that devs are people too... I find it hard to believe that there's intentional foul-play with their anti-cheat. they want people to play their game, not brick their customers into not playing, then they couldn't make money off cosmetics x)

ngl, probably making FAR more money selling the data the "anti-cheat" illegally harvests while combing through systems for "hacks"

i mean you're free to scrutinize. more than likely google knows more about you than they do.
I think most games have some access to your computer so they can use it for their data for performance patches and other changes. I think even steam has that same information.
