better squire gear?

So I was on my lock and i had the crappy gray quality spell book, i finished a game, went back to squire, happened to mouse over the squire stock spellbook, and for some reason it was white quality? what happened? did I do something that allowed me to start with stock white gear instead of stock gray?

Getting higher affinity with merchants by doing quests, gives you common grade gear in the squire.

Also, make sure you unequip the gray one in the squire, and equip the white one (it doesnt do so automatically for some reason).

Getting affinity from Merchants quests will unlock better Squire gear, so Weaponsmith affinity will improve the weapons, Tailor the Cloth armours etc. You can google it and it will show you what Merchants improve what gear.
