Makes blocking in general just feel so awkward, like I need to bend myself at a 60 degree angle backwards just to hide my face.
I think it makes perfect sense in terms of realism. If you can see slightly over your shield then that means the top of the shield is not fully covering your eyes. It would completely cover your FoV if it were (IRL and in game). Therefore your entire forehead is sticking out over the top of the shield. Sure maybe they can move the shield up a bit in the game for default blocking but then more of your torso would be uncovered and the shield would be less effective of blocking in general, especially for PvP.
