What's more effective? Unloading almost all of your Zap casts to down a single skeleton or landing 3-4 hits to the head with a stick?
Ignite is actually decent if self-cast, especially with higher magical power. although this is best done with either a staff and the Staff Mastery perk, or Rondel Dagger with Crystal Ball cuz you get many more attacks in the same time and thus more Ignite value.
Crystal Sword is known for having bad dmg at poor rarity. in fact it may be the single worst starting item in the game. it begins to do more appropriate dmg at rarities beyond that.
some wizs use it, I personally don't.
if they wanted to improve wiz melee they can buff the weapons we can already use.
the reality is a majority of wiz players are playing the class precisely cuz they don't want to be just like most melee classes currently. it's not just about perks or weapons, wizs have the lowest base health in the game and in 90% of melee situations you're better served using Magic Missile. the class in general isn't oriented towards melee. warlocks have more options in this department.
the exception would be the Ignite builds I mentioned above, and even then you would probably still be better served using MM 50-60% of the time
