so if you can cast spells from a staff whats the book for again?

Book casts faster and has the lowest move speed penalty of -10.
Staff has higher magic damage bonus + melee attack at the cost slower casting and -30 move speed.
Ive rarely used crystal balls but you can hold a weapon in the other hand so thats cool.

Crystal sword is technically a casting tool but thats now what wizards use it for, its for stabbin once you get a epic or better.

Can you cast spells with anything in your hand like druid? (of course doing so you lose out on the stats of a held item).
