Dark and Darker

Undisclosed "spyware" that came with the game.
Seriously why didn't the devs say that the game comes with two additional "programs" that run in the background and scan your entire computer? Talking about Tavern.exe and TavernWorker.exe

I have no idea what they are, aside from some posts claiming that its spyware and others claiming it's anticheat.

And again, why are those needed? Was it that hard to say on steam page that it includes anticheat if it is one? Even then why is it this custom nonsense? Why not use proven anticheat software such as EAC or VAC? I dont trust this whatever it is and it is.

And for the ones who do not believe that their game is screwing up with your system, here's the proof:

Nice, even better that it's not listed on their store page, something insidious like that.

Yeah, not gonna bother with this game. Shame really.

If you're the type of person who gets paranoid over everything, you'll miss out on everything. Carry on.

Bro, have you ever played a BattlEye game? That is literally a rootkit that, at least used to, send files and executables directly to BattlEye's servers to be looked at by hand by some Eastern European weirdos. This is pretty tame in terms of invasive behavior and at least it's blatantly obvious about it.

Obvious as in there's virtually no information nor mention of this program and it's purpose?

Obvious as in you can run a process sniffer on it and see exactly what it's doing as opposed to obfuscated code that hides it's methodologies. That's probably because the Devs made a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ homebrew 'anti-cheat', but still.

Because people easily dismiss everything, things like this exist.

Thats exactly why people need to fight agaisnt BS like this, else it's gonna get worse. Under the guise of "oh the user might cheat" they allow themselves to scan your entire system? In what world is that OK? In this one apparently, unless people speak up.

Whether things are visible or not, there was virtually zero reason not to use EAC or something less invasive. The game runs on unreal engine 5... EAC is made by the same corpo, why have a custom anticheat unless that's not it's only purpose?

While I totally agree with you - it's only going to get worse. AI is starting to be integrated into Anti-Cheats so it's only getting worse and worse for end-users/gamers. Before long, the AI will be able to see exactly how much time you spend looking at ladyboy porn and report it to their corporate masters down to the exact nanosecond.

Then hopefully EU does something about it, because no other nation will as it seems.

One can hope, but too little too late if they're not already drafting laws as we speak. I'm in the CyberSec industry and I can promise you it's bad. Like, bad bad.

Then you have the credentials to raise this concern to a higher level. If you're in EU or even if not, you could contact them about it... Sometimes only 1 droplet of water is enough to cause a spillover.

This is late stage capitalism, homie. People with waAAAAaaaaAAAAaaay higher creds have already raised flags and blown whistles and they were quickly shot down and treated like psychos, or outright thrown under the bus. As long as Karen can get her nails did and can grab her cold brew caramel mocha frappe cappuccino with steamed oat milk pretending like nothing is wrong - ain't ♥♥♥♥ going to change in the States.

I'll also add I'm definitely not a doomsayer. Just telling it how it is. To some, they don't mind being Meta/Alphabet/insert evil tech company here's Data Slave as it's not something that affects their day to day lives - but all I can promise as time progresses things will get more and more intrusive in normal life and we'll either just roll over and accept it as a society, or the camel's back will eventually break and then we'd have to deal with the fallout from that. We shall see, only time will tell.
