Melee combat is extermly simple, boring and unskilled
its just horrible, there is no way a modern game has such bad combat system. i dont want this to be chivalry or mordhau but godamn at least let us decide to which direction swing the sword

this game is going to fail so hard, just look at the respondes, people dont want the game to progress, to be better

For those who played more advanced melee combat games like Mount&Blade or Chivalry or Mordhau, it's obvious how simplistic Dark and Darker is.

There's still some skill ofc, quite basic as it's mainly about body leaning, weapon drags and accels which is also a thing in Mordhau and Chiv but in addition to other mecanics wedo'nt have here in DnD.

So OP is quite correct. He said it on a twitter-like tone that makes his opinion less important than our urge to spank his face BUT let's be objective, he's not that wrong.

Problem is, if you introduce directional swings it kinda DOES turn into Mordhau/Chivalry. How would it not be at that point? The entire point of those games is having combat based around that system. It's far more engaging for a casual audience this way with fixed animations.

Could you imagine a Barbarian running up to you, doing a Wessex drag with a Zweihander (Mordhau slang for an attack animation intentionally manipulated to get around your guard by making it look as janky/as late as possible) with rage procced and 2 tap headshotting you? Yeah, sounds fun right?

Introducing directional attacks would complicate the game massively for casuals and most likely end up killing the game in my opinion. Even now some people find it hard to block/riposte with the janky hit detection.

This is coming from a Mordhau/Chivalry player

I agree with this man.

Going for a copy pasta of Mordhau's mecanics would bprobably be the worse possible idea as mordhau is extremely unappealing when it comes to mastering it. As opposed to M&B being more intuitive and clear but with a core mecanic being fully directional which is miles away from DnD.

It's better to leave it this way than to try to make it more complexe, risking to end with another mordhau-like gameplay aka absurd and janky movements to "glitch your way through"

The melee combat is all about spacing, reach, dodging/blocking.
This guy has been covering blocking for a while and is decent at higher level PvP.
You can't tell me there is NO skill involved if you watch these HR fights in this vid, especially that 3rd fight vs. the barb: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHmHaIF21pQ

Also boring? I can imagine that barb fight had his blood rushing quite a bit.

Learning how to be effective with an asset store quality combat system doesn't make the combat system any less jank-ass. It doesn't have to be Mordhau but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ can it at least not feel like swinging a sword underwater while in a dream and wearing weighted clothes? Hire some actual animators.

yet the still is going to keep losing players until its dead for the lack of fun actual melee combat

oh no doubt about it, you need skill to navegate around such a simple and mediocer fighting system, trying to get the best out of it is indeed hard. still sucks

i have been reading a lot about these devs decisions, who they are and what they do and they all seem like junior devs learning to make a game. i highly doubt they are ever going to improve combat or at least its animation.

What's your problem, pvp must be really easy for you if it's that simple.

the game is obviously totally going to die because the fighting is just not fun, is janky, clunky and annoying. most people know this and just leave the game.

I'm sorry it's a genuine skill issue, memes aside, I find it thrilling.

The game already exists with a core base for years even before it went f2p. And games that are much simpler than this are running and doing well.

Just because you dislike the simplicity of the combat doesnt mean everybody does.

Every time someone mention rogue is dodgy, i wonder if they play the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game, everyone can duck and do the matrix with similar result, like full stop what is this cope? Double Jumping make you slow af too.

Those games allow for a more defined 1v1 fight, but I would argue the group fighting mechanics are oversimplified due the huge zerg of players common to those games to the point that Dark and Darker is actually quite a bit deeper as soon as more than two bodies are in a single equation. You won't see Wizard haste/invis plays happening in Chiv to get behind a group and waste them, that's for sure.

And the other thing is that if melee was more similar to Mordhau or Chiv, you would end up with too much mental stack on the player to have extra mechanics like spell casting.
