Unlocking Chests

I'm going to assume that Rogue's can open all chests with whatever skill they have (I haven't played Rogue yet). So why can I sometimes open certain chests with other classes and sometimes not? I know of the existence of lockpicks but they're pretty rare I think. Is it determined by the gear/skill you have?

It's only Rogue with lockpicking perk and Bard with certain melody who can open those without lockpicks.
Though lockpicks arent THAT rare and if you want more you can buy them on market or mine iron in goblin caves to forge some

You don't open LOCKED chests I assume, thats just lion chests can spawn either locked or not. Golden ones, on the other side, are always locked

ive played the game nearly 20 hours now and no lockpicks.. they are pretty RARE. they sell for 45-60 gold a lock pick so pricey but id rather just loot a lockpick to make sure the chest contents are pure profit and that i dont die with an unused purchased lockpick

I occasionally find some. I think it's always two and I found a pair every third or fourth dungeon. So it's pretty rare in my opinion.

Yeah you get them in pairs and there are places like shelfs with those, or just mob loot. I'd say I usually find a couple every 2-3 dungeons which isnt a very rare occasion to me. Also, as I said, can mine a bit of iron and craft those if you want to have them for runs (and don't want to pay for those), especially for golden chests and in high-roller

ok so it must be distinct places then and not really chests or pots that you find them? I dont loot nearly enough shelfs so i will look in more shelves and cupboards.. maybe ill look into mining them too
