building my first character. I'm an old hand in these games and I am curious what class is usually in short supply in this particular game.

If you mean what's the least played, weakest class in the game. Well that's rogues.

I mean what class is usually most in demand if you are building a party. in many game it ends up being the tank or healer. you find parties sitting around waiting for one of those before they can take on tough content.

Bear in mind I have not played the game yet, so this question may not be relevant. I don't know. but it seems to be multiplayer and party based, so that is why I asked.

Wiz, high skill ceiling, more gear dependent and takes a lot more effort to succeed, also slow PvE clear makes it unattractive (mobs have MDR)
Somewhat similarly: bard, also because some don't like the song mechanic (like rhythm mini-game)

As for current team comps, there's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of fighters, barbs, warlocks, druids and to a lesser extent (I think?) clerics (druids are being favored atm) and rangers running around. So the holy trinity is covered.
It's just that wiz and bard are under-represented, but that's because of the huge influx of new players still learning the game.

magic damage resistance
Wizard is the least played and most demanded, a good one in teamfights can turn the tide and they have multiple tools against the new class.

Playing a more supportive role like a bard or cleric for trio's would be a good idea if its about a team-based role, but i would argue you should find what class works best for you in terms of enjoyment and play-style, no class is really 'in short supply' and the best class you can play in duo/trio is the one you vibe with the most at the time

at higher gearscore people are often looking for wiz. in general, I would say right now it's bard, cleric, and druid. I have seen many people also looking for lock particularly at lower GS
