What are Death Beatles and how do I get rid of it?

So the last few games, I've died against a death beetle, but not the flying bugs, but these smaller bugs that fallow me around everywhere I go. They deal damage and even after healing using a shrine, my screen goes dark and I eventually die. How do I stop this?

There is a timer in the bottom right, when it is close to running out you will start taking damage by beetles, frost or rocks (based on which map that you are in) and when it reaches 0 you die instantly.

That makes sense. Thank you. I just picked up the game and didn't know what anything means. Especially what happens after the timer runs out.
