Dark and Darker

This or escape from tarkov?
I played the beta on here along time ago, it was pretty good. Not sure what they changed since then and I've also played my first looter shooter last year which was cycle and I enjoyed it aside from having to fight solo vs 3 people and the combat is 100% gear based. Not sure which one to buy

Hard to say it will depend your style.

=> Tarkov (i won't fully detail as you seems to know the game). :
(*) FPS shooter "realistic" in modern time.
(*) Two game mode : pmc with stat system and scav every x min (i didn't precise the time as it depend your hideout).
(*) The game will put you with team or not.
(*) You have quest, an hideout to manage etc, ...
(*) You can though play solo with a mod which allow you a bigger control of the game (modify stat, ...).

=> Dark and Darker
(*) Medieval Fantasy with a graphic style to like or not (i personnaly like it).
(*) You can choose to play in full solo or duo or team. However it depend of the map selection. You have currently 3 maps (with system of others level for two of them but let keep this simple) and each map rotate between solo, duo, trio every 30 min. If you are time limited, you don't want to play in duo / trio, you will have to deal with the map currently playing.
(*) You can create multiple characters however they would have a fix class (ranger, fighther, ...), their own level, their own inventory. If you want to try another class you will need to create a new character.
(*) mobs and fighting can be difficult at the start cause you need to know the movement of each monsters (there is a video of 20 min about that).
(*) The game has still some gear gap however you will see the gear gap mainly in "hard mode" (high roll). In lower level everyone is limited to maximum equipment "common" which reduce the effect.
(*) You will be match with people of different levels : you can be level 1 with people 20 (max level currently).
(*) You have a system to be able to buy skin and emote in game with real money or ingame currency. Ingame currency is obtain after a certain amount of escaping dungeons. Each skin will have differents stat (with positive and negative : for exemple the skeleton skin add more defense against magic but physical protection).
(*) The support system is more communicative than Tarkov.
(*) In term of escaping it is different from tarkov.
1) In tarkov, on theory, everyone could escape through the exit place who are identified.
In this game, you have a limited number of door which are marked on the map and can be seen if you are close and are one time use (so nobody can use it if you use it) and a system of portal to escape which are one use only.
Blue portal : escape
Red portal : lead you to another level which will be harder.
2) In tarkov you have a time limit and system of drink and food.
In this game, you have a timer with a system of circle where you will progressively take a fixed number of dammage which will force you to move (and sometimes the exit door will be in the "dead zone"). However some class can survive more less or well in this zone (exemple : cleric, bard, warlock).
3) In tarkov you have a system of pouch which you don't have here.
4) In tarkov you don't have much xp penality for dying (except for high roll) and even if you die, you restart with a basic kit (similar to marauders for exemple).

Tarkov is a horrible mess.
I left that scene for good, it wastes your time and is filled to the brim with hackers.

2 differents games lol , tarkov is more complete game ... dark and darker is funny but need some developement

Idk I've skimmed through a review and apparently blue gears make skill irrelevant and someone unkillable. This is not good. And there's a fighter has 95% damage reduction. Idk how common this is or how naturally its achieved but its a turnoff

Dark and darker is a horrible mess. Worst experiance I ever had starting a game. The game is designed to make you miserable. As a beginner, you need more help, more healing, better equipment to have a chance in the dungeon and especially against other palyers who are all veterans now.
The game does the oppsite. You get no beginner area, no healing and basic euqipment and no chance like in Takrov to make easy runs. In solo runs you need dozens of runs to end one. And then you lose everything in the following runs becasue you are still no match for the other players. Others will tell you you have to run away. But where? If you look at the veterans videos it looks doable and sometimes even easy. But this are the people who have month of skill in advance and will hunt you, easy. This takes a long time. Maybe the game was easy when they started becasue all players were bad.

Addtiotinally it's jank. You can not jump over a 10 cm spider and where you can jump at all feels quite random. Enemys follow you forever, at least till you run in a bunch of other monster. Close a door? Goblin archer destros it in no time.
Go in close combat with an archer, forget it. becasue that would make sense. The game puts so much stress on a beginner it's no comparision to dark souls.

If you want to go trough all of this because the basic idea and gameplay is fun, then go for it.

If you want to go trough all of this because the basic idea and gameplay is fun, then go for it.

Some explanation :
"You get no beginner area" : beginner area are classic mode where the grade of weapon is limited meaning the gap in term of equipement will be lower. In tarkov, you have the offline mode which didn't teach much, unless you got to tarkov mod which allow you to play fully solo with more detail to it.
There is also an area who is for me more "beginner friendly" which is the ice map :
*Big map for in general a low amount of player (it is rare to meet people).
*As you spawn in a map, you have often 50% to spawn in a room with an escape portal. It means you can loot and just have to defend your exit point.
*Main difficulty come from the mobs which have a pattern different but can be learn easily.
* You often have chests to plunder.
* You have for me one of the best looking escape way proposed : an elevator proposing a boss fight in lower part (only if you agro it volontary) or the escape which get you to the surface.
* There is no real zone so you are not forced to move. You get three state depending the timer : nothing, get slow down, get slowly hurt.

"no healing and basic euqipment" :
=> You start with a basic equipement including :
* One or two weapon depending the class
* a pant
* some front clothes depending the class
* two torch
* an extra accessory depending your class (healing potion, bandage, ...).

=> Healing in this game work differently from tarkov :
* As you get hit you lose a unrecovery part (similar in tarkov when you lose a part of the body) and a recover part.
* "Recover part" can be recovered by using bandage, potion, fire camp or by simply sitting. The recover rate will depend of your "vigor"
*"Unrecovery part" require potion, healing spell, or fire camp".
* You have some healing spell and healing skill depending the class which can help. For exemple : cleric is a good class for beginner as he can heal himself and protect people and is effective against undead. Otherwise :
a) Warlock : can heal with his spell but need to be carefull as it also use his health
b) Fighther : it has two skill to heal : second wind (one use except with item) and victory strike (which give extra dammage bonus, unlimited use with a small cooldown but ask you to know how to count).
c) Berserker : there is one skill for that but meh. It is better to use his fast recover ability link to his vigor.
d) Bard : it is more for "recoverable part" but it works well especially if you wait in the zone.
e) Ranger : "Biscuit" : 3 time use, add 25 health back with cooldown.
f) Wizard : can't "heal" but it can add protection to avoid taking dammage.

"and no chance like in Takrov to make easy runs" : it depends your class. In tarkov, you can indeed make "easy run" by playing for exemple scav on military base hiding in a bush and leaving at last moment. On dark and darker it is possible but harder link to the zone system and the system or specific escape.

"n solo runs you need dozens of runs to end one" : it depends. Sometimes you can have 8 escape in a row and sometimes fail 3 times in a row. You never know what and who you will found ... A bit like tarkov and escape camper ^^.

"And then you lose everything in the following runs becasue you are still no match for the other players." : In regard of tarkov, no. You respawn with basic equipement, don't need to wait to get energy and hydratation back and restore your character, you can go back anytime.

"Others will tell you you have to run away. But where?" : Hard to answer straight on that, each situation is different. For exemple : You can go back to previous room , close door to prepare an ambush. Or if you have a fighting class, you can brutal force at your own risk.

"Addtiotinally it's jank. You can not jump over a 10 cm spider and where you can jump at all feels quite random" : yes jump are bug. And ironically you didn't get much this effect as rogue with double jump ...

"Enemys follow you forever, at least till you run in a bunch of other monster." it depends the distance you have. You can lose them with a minimal distance and losing line of sight. Or there is skill and invisibility potion.

"Close a door? Goblin archer destros it in no time." : if you close the door as you get aggro and the goblin is preparing his shoot (hearable with sound), yes. It apply with most class.

"Go in close combat with an archer, forget it. becasue that would make sense." : Relatively simple :
Disclaimer : remember to check the color of the skeleton to know how much shoot he can do : 1, 2 ,3 depending the difficulty. It can't be fully applyable for ice archer as they have a knock back technique if you stay close too long (which make sense also).
a) If you have a shield : maintain a minimal distance, put the shield slight high to cover a head or torse shoot, wait the arrow by moving aside, as he shoot get close and hit. Get back and repeat the opperation.
b) If you have no shield : get in mid range, run in circle. After his shoot that he will miss, get closer, land a hit and go back. Repeat the process.
