Is Wizard meant to be playable?
Note : I've only played a little bit of wizard and had no fun the entire time.

I played and sucked at Tarkov until I understood it and started doing a little better. This game seems to take from Tarkov in its loot system but not gameplay. There's a difference between "You got sniped because you ran through a very open area while fighting scavs, giving away your position" and "this flying insect took 2 ice bolts and a lightning strike but still killed you in 3 hits". The prior you can learn from and work around. The latter you can not. I shouldn't have to run backwards or in circles or bait attacks and move back. I'm a wizard. If I can't do damage what am I good for? Is the meta really "use every single one of your spells per room + meditate before you move on"?

I haven't tried in groups yet, might later, but I can't see myself contributing much if I can hit my teammates with spells (which I imagine will be the case because enemies can hit each other). You can't fit 3 people against 4 zombies in 1 small room with no verticality and expect people to have front, mid, and back lines. Left clicking does jack all with the staff, having to stop to cast a spell (which is 100% fair because you're a wizard) means the enemies catch up and you basically swap blows, and as well as that some spells hit you, too. First encounter I'm on 20% hp. Otherwise if I'm trying to snipe a bug, it just won't happen. The thing moves too much, the ice bolts are EXTREMELY precise, and melee combat is atrocious, especially when it's on the floor and I gotta go hit it with a staff that has a dagger-sized hitbox.

I'm not complaining as though the game is finished because it's a public access blah blah blah but as it is, it needs some really heavy balancing. Give me more damage or make me less squishy.

Thanks for the jester reacts. You pwnd me good. Jester react more, you're totally destroying me with steam points. Oh noooo :'( Got me good

your a wizard, you will be squishy..... when you attack things, use the range, and learn to knit, when you need to. Use objects and move around and back and forth as well.

Give you a rough idea of the ideal playstyle for wizard.

I've been playing wizard quite a bit for the first time this playtest and I've actually been having a really good time. Magic missile is your best friend for erasing PvE mobs, haste and invisibility are good tools for solo play. Once you get used to how mobs attack, bashing skeleton heads in with your stick is pretty simple since the wizard is easily fast enough to dodge, and has a perfect angle with its first attack to never hit a skeleton's shield. Same with goblins, but they're smaller, so they're more annoying.

Use all of your spells sparingly, but USE them, then meditate and use them more. Health is also a resource, if you can afford to melee, and you have the time to do so, then bash some heads and get more used to melee combat. Haste will give you even more room for error in that regard. Invisibility de-aggros monsters, so make use of that as well.

Ultimately, though, the best way to learn really is with a party. They can cover for your weaknesses and you'll learn what works and what doesn't. If you hit them with a fireball, well. . . that happens. I have a friend who would curse at us when HE shot US in the back of the head, so y'know, be prepared for people to get frustrated if you make a mistake, and try to be forgiving to others who make mistakes.

It's not, i threw 4 fireballs and two bolts at a goblin and achieved nothing. Chain lightning does a lot of damage tho, when it chains back at you from doing nothing at the enemies.

Wizard and Cleric are really a pain at beginning. When you start using Criytal Balls or Books, is when the real game start for you.

In a game where you're locked to a character and some people play solo, "this character is useless at the beginning" sounds like terrible planning/balancing.

Haven't seen a single person suggest any other spell than magic missile. You can't give me a class that starts with 5-6 attacks and tell me only 1 is viable. Again, poor balancing

2 are viable! Stick. Your stick is also good. :)

Wizard is really strong, but hard to learn. its something you need to practice a ton of.

Hitting a bug with 3 spells and it still being alive isn't "really strong"

Wizard has arguably the highest skill ceiling.
I saw crazy footage of people 1 vs x with Wizard using Invisibility, Haste, Magic Missile and Fireball.

I am a simple man, I smash doors with my barbie.

I play wizard too and I would recommend trying to clear once while kinda playing like a rat and trying to kite/ kill stuff with your staff and magic bullets then you should start buying a magic sword and a book for your second set of weapon, use the sword to kill mobs and the book for pvp fights, works well for me ! GL
Low_IQ_Huan Feb 8, 2023 @ 1:32am
I can say tho that the casting of spells like the fireball is kinda weird, super huge hitbox so be careful not to kill yourself with it ! the one that feels the best for me to cast is lightning strike just gotta make sure you're far enough, magic missile is crazy good but not that crazy in pvp until you get some good gear, then it destroys
Wizard is really GOOD, but you can't just stand in the open and pew pew, takes a couple of spells combined and remember when cuing a spell you can still select another spell to have rdy.
