Shields not blocking
I've been trying to play cleric, but lose any fight to players because my shield doesn't seem to do anything? All attacks enemies do will go through my shield, I've been told I need to aim my shield at the incoming attack but that hasn't helped, any ideas?

my friend you must aim that shield and look at where you want to block its a bit of getting used to but blocking solves alot of issues and allows you to get some damage on a enemy target when they stagger themselves or flinch from the recoil of their attack. although be warned.. some enemies will be alot nastier and stronger and they will either completely break through your block or hit so hard you exhaust yourself and are stuck in a stagger animation.

You have to point the shield (not just your mouse retical) at the part of the weapon that will hit you first. So for polearms/spears you have to block the tip not the handle. For great axes only the axe head, but for longswords a thrust and a slash requires blocking two different parts. If even the tip of your head is visible over the shield, you can be headshot in it. That's why you see many PvP fights involve jumping or crouching (and blocking straight up) instead of just standing there holding block.

It takes some getting used to, but practice blocking on mobs since their attack patterns are predictable but still hurt if you get hit. Spacing is also a bit funky at first, but you will learn after watching other players fight that if you are in their face, sometimes a weird part of the weapon hits the tip of a shoulder pad or hand before you have a chance to block it.

Bigger/heavier shields increase the surface you get to block with but decrease mobility & visibility. I would honestly recommend learning to "dodge" in combat before blocking. Blocking especially in PVP should be used to soak hits you cannot get out of the way for.

If you've ever played Chivalry or Mordhau, dragging and accelling swings is a thing that works in this game (but not as well as the other two games) too! I highly recommend just going into matches with bandages and default gear to practice blocking & dancing with PvE enemies before you run into players. Also keep in mind that the weapon combos are identical for each weapon type. So if you know the enemy's felling axe will be coming from above on every swing, you can crouch, block, and look straight up to catch it. Otherwise if he jumps he is going to plant it in your skull.

Hope this helps!

Thanks I'll try more

And yea I have played a ton of Mordhau and a bit of Chivalry 1. So I understand directional blocking, accels, and dragging as well. Was hoping the combat here would be more similar

This man told ya exactly how it works aim the shield at where the swing is starting up or will be connecting to longer reach/ bigger weapons hit at a wider arc either predict where its starting up at or predict where it will be landing and you should be fine. takes practice but do not give upp in time you will have learned to parry and block with the best of them.

There is also a big desync/long animation. Had my friend test the swings and when I put my shield up exactly when he starts the swing, I won't make it, the shield, from his POV looked like it was mid activation animation and did not protect yet. Also, it's stupid because you can walk through shields, if your enemy is a rogue, don't even try to block, they get in your face and pass the block no matter what. The other issue is, the stagger after a block is almost nothing, even if you block, the enemy can swing again and trade with you anyway, you can't block, attack and block again before the enemy hits you, the stagger is like 0.2s, so you will hit first that way, but you will trade anyway. Also, the weapons have collision damage, so they can swing above you and snap on you mid swing, like in Mordhau, esp. weird when a spear hits next to you, but the person just yanks the mouse and hits you anyway because of the collision during the animation window. Also, shields have shield value, damage can go through that and it seems you will take the full damage.
