Dark and Darker

Can someone explain to me what the point of dual wielding is?
Example: Rapier + offhand dagger. Or the default rogue dagger + offhand dagger.

From what I can tell, all it does is give you an alternate attack string (right click instead of left). Which I don't understand the point of. i.e. if I have 2 attacks (a nd b), if a does more DPS than b, why would I ever use b (other than say, extra reach on a rapier)?

In other words: if my offhand dagger does more damage than my mainhand dagger, why would I ever use left click instead of right click. Likewise: If my mainhand rapier does more damage (and has better reach) than my offhand dagger, why would I ever use right click?

I would have expected to attack with both weapons, or have some extra (bonus) attacks woven into the usual attack string for the offhand weapon. Am I missing something? Is there some combination of left click and right click that gives you more attacks per second than if you just equipped one or the other??

I dunno about dual wielding for rogue, but when i dual wielded as a barb it did have some advantages, namely: Seemingly faster attacks when alternating, as well as a much longer combo chain, 6 hits rather than 3 if i remember correctly. That on top of having a shorter and faster set of weapons than the usual big axes/swords that barbs are stuck with.

default dagger is nothing but thrust attacks, good quick attacks, but easily blocked by shield. The secondary dagger has side to side attacks which make it easier to slip past a shield.

Also the fighter has a perk for dual wielding, not sure about other classes.
