$80 usd for a game is unreasonable when its not a sota product, thats just greedy
It depends on what you consider a state of the art product. Because, if your point is a MSFS20 usual troll, MSFS20 is far from being one sota product too, proof being its 10 years support promise has been cancelled and you'll have to pay for its sequel - cough, update - this year.
And you are comparing a dev backed by a giant publisher, Microsoft, to an indie B2B and marginally B2C dedicated one. Ptoof is, MSFS20 is a mainstream product, X Plane a professional product. X Plane is $80, no other edition, MSFS20 is $70 for the standard edition and up to $120 for the premium edition to give you access to a few planes and airports, isn't that 1000% greediness?
I have nothing against the game MSFS20, on the contrary, Asobo did an outstanding job for a first try (it is not a flight sim dev, neither a sim of anything, it is specialized in huge open worlds, like... The Crew1), but this broken promise after having sold more than 40 millions copies is just disrespectful.
I must admit that if you already own X Plane 11, it may be hard to justify the $80 tag, but you had months to get X Plane 12 at $40, and it was worth the price for such an update.
If you are not an XP11 owner and hesitate between XP12 and MSFS20 basic edition, for $10 more with XP12 you get a solid promising product instead of a dead one which is going to be replaced in a few months. As a casual flight simmer you may like the nice MSFS20's graphics, and they are nice, but the lightning is cartoony, where it is, although still being improved, much more realistic in XP12. And flying at low altitude with the photogrametry in MSFS isn't great compared to sharp autogen buildings, and it becomes more important if you like flying helicopters. Flying helicopters is also a strong point of X Plane.
Personnally, I think XP12's feeling while flying is absolutely great but I'm sure it is a question of taste, so I won't state anyone would prefer it to MSFS20. Where MSFS20 is absolutely atrocious though is its UI. It is insane and, as I say in general, the brains behind such badly organized menus are obviously disturbed or tortured. The fact that these menus passed all the quality testings is beyond me and really make me have doubts about this game when I use it (on a friend's PC). This imo just shows how something is wrong in the dev process in general. That's why the team can't comply his 10 years support promise, the code is too awful to update the game, it has to make a whole new game. Just look at XP's menus, it's old school looking but absolutely clear and efficient, you can set up everything in a few clicks. Just try to deactivate all fly aids in MSFS20...
If you are on a budget and can't spend $80 on a flight sim, just don't bother with both products until XP12 gets on sale and MSFS24 comes out (but it will be more than $80). Or just download Flightgear 2020. It is free and some mods are very good. You can automatically download satellite imagery (well, not great quality but in some places it looks quiet immersive). And it seriously make things better than XP and MSFS. If your goal was just a troll, well, just spend your money for your MSFS24 update after having bought MSFS20. If you don't need the whole detailed world, Aerofly FS4 may be a good alternative, cheaper but with limited terrain.
If you are about cheapness, I have to remind you that MSFS20 and Microsoft's communication just made the joysticks / yokes prices increase by 100% at least during months, and they are still currently priced at least 50% more than their previous price.
Overall, for $80 I consider being able to travel almost all over the world in XP12 (antartica is available as a free mod and a paid mod, Artica partly as a free mode, fully as a paid one), with an incredible flight feeling and solid features with ATC and systems, is great value. I use essantial mods, autoortho and simheaven worlds, If you are not willing to get into a few mods AND are more interested in exploration than using systems, just forget XP12, go for MSFS24 (seriously no MSFS20, use Flightgear waiting for MSFS24).
What do you expect for $80 when you may pay almost the same price for a dedicated study module about one plane? you should really think about the value of the products on the market before entering in a bad trip.
Have you seen those professional full motion sims used by commercial pilots? Graphics in those is 2010 era at best. Those cost $100K or more.
MSFS looks better but relies on constantly downloading world data.
X-Plane looks a little less nice, but you can download 100% of the world and fly fully offline.
Yep, the people complaining about MSFS are basically X-Plane fans that have almost all used MSFS for less than 10 hours. barely scratched the surface. It's basically equivalent to me complaining about X-Plane for not being able to get updated scenery on the surface, when really, below the surface it's possible with payware or free mods.
