If you're flying an aircraft that has a GPS or more sophisticated navigation system, you can just punch in your destination and any intermediate waypoints and then let the autopilot fly the route for you.
So, for example for the flight you mentioned, in a stock C172, you could enter the ICAO code of your destination to the GPS (KEWR in case of Newark) by using the 'Direct to' function on the GPS and then follow the magenta line.
Personally, I use an external program (I know, you don't want one) to plan my flight, then I manually enter the planned route into the GPS or FMC as required. If I fly something that doesn't have a GPS like the Super Cub or Stinson, I just navigate by visual cues and compass (and one of the map options I mentioned earlier). Which of course works just fine for any other GA aircraft, too, when flying under VFR conditions.
Judging by another post they have no interest in it.
"...you could enter the ICAO code of your destination to the GPS (KEWR in case of Newark) by using the 'Direct to' function on the GPS and then follow the magenta line...."
---I figured out where the GPS in the cockpit was. I click on it, and a bunch of codes are on the complicated screen (keep in mind, I"m not a pilot in real life). I tweaked, with the mouse, one of the numerous dials and figured out how to (clumsily) navigate to KEWR (Newark), but I see no "direct to" writing to choose or press or somehow tweak. So I cannot for the life of me figure out how to select a destination properly.
If you would be kind enough to tell me how to program/input, from inside my cessna's cockpit, "from kennedy (any) runway TO Newark Airport" as a destination, using my mouse/KB, telling me what dials to tweak (using my KB), so I can set it properly and then choose AI to control the flight, this complete XP newbie would very much appreciate it. If it's too much trouble, I understand. I am completely new to this game and to flying sims in general. I'm much appreciative of your time and effort.
