X-Plane 12

X-Plane 12

Can't figure out how to set a complete: starting (takeoff) AND ENDING (landing destination) flightpath in XP 12.
I'm using M/KB only with my desktop PC, and am allowing AI to control my flight.
I can clearly see how to start a flight on a runway including takeoff...but nowhere in any flight control/configuration settings/menus do I see how to target an ENDING destination to my flight.
I don't want to download any external programs...I simply want to use the XP 12 game and all it's DLCs (which I've installed).
For instance: I want to fly from JFK airport in NY to, for instance, Newark airport in NJ, USA.
How do I select Newark as my FINAL DESTINATION in XP 12?

There is no built in flight planner as such in X-Plane. You fly to your destination by using a map, either the built in map ('m' key) or using an online map (such as Sky Vector) or even an old fashioned printed map. The built in map isn't very useful for longer flights as the range it covers is rather limited.

If you're flying an aircraft that has a GPS or more sophisticated navigation system, you can just punch in your destination and any intermediate waypoints and then let the autopilot fly the route for you.

So, for example for the flight you mentioned, in a stock C172, you could enter the ICAO code of your destination to the GPS (KEWR in case of Newark) by using the 'Direct to' function on the GPS and then follow the magenta line.

Personally, I use an external program (I know, you don't want one) to plan my flight, then I manually enter the planned route into the GPS or FMC as required. If I fly something that doesn't have a GPS like the Super Cub or Stinson, I just navigate by visual cues and compass (and one of the map options I mentioned earlier). Which of course works just fine for any other GA aircraft, too, when flying under VFR conditions.

Get MFS2020, you can watch your whole flight from the cabin, but its a lot more fun and satisfying when you learn how to fly.

Judging by another post they have no interest in it.

THank you, Echo, for the great instructions. ANd Maki, yes, as I said, I'd get MSFS if it wasn't so utterly dependent on the MS servers. People are playing MSFS 2020 about 10-20% of the time, and the rest of the 80% or so seems to be waiting for interminable downloads and updates to complete, through the MS slow as molasses server.

Echo: So I choose the Cessna 172. I choose to start at JFK on a runway. I don't have ANY idea how to do the following, though, using my M/KB:
"...you could enter the ICAO code of your destination to the GPS (KEWR in case of Newark) by using the 'Direct to' function on the GPS and then follow the magenta line...."
---I figured out where the GPS in the cockpit was. I click on it, and a bunch of codes are on the complicated screen (keep in mind, I"m not a pilot in real life). I tweaked, with the mouse, one of the numerous dials and figured out how to (clumsily) navigate to KEWR (Newark), but I see no "direct to" writing to choose or press or somehow tweak. So I cannot for the life of me figure out how to select a destination properly.
If you would be kind enough to tell me how to program/input, from inside my cessna's cockpit, "from kennedy (any) runway TO Newark Airport" as a destination, using my mouse/KB, telling me what dials to tweak (using my KB), so I can set it properly and then choose AI to control the flight, this complete XP newbie would very much appreciate it. If it's too much trouble, I understand. I am completely new to this game and to flying sims in general. I'm much appreciative of your time and effort.

Press -D-> on the right and then use the knobs on the bottom and enter in KEWR then once done press ENT twice. If flying the G1000 version use the FMS knobs (can be done on the PFD or MFD). Be sure the you select the correct source if you want to AP to follow it in NAV mode. You want to see GPS, not VLOC or VOR1 / VOR2 respectively. In both the steam gauge cockpit and glass cockpit it's the CDI button.

Thank you very much. I'll try this out and see how it works!
