other (older) oregon trail games?
anyone here have any idea where or how i can legitimately purchase a copy of an older oregon trail game? im an oregonian who played the game in my youth at school and i wanna play that one. i added this to my wishlist then came to the discussions and saw the wokeness and changed my mind on spending money on this version.

although i know the old games are essentially abandonware i would like to accquire a digital copy a legit way, any of them unlisted on steam (such as skyrim standard edition is)? i loved whichever version i played in like 2007 in my schools computer lab in 3rd grade, i even played it at recess

Aside from MAYBE finding a working copy (and there were multiple versions made for different computers, the most famous of which was the Apple II version) on eBay where you'd be hard-pressed to get it run without the original hardware it was designed to work on, there's no way to get a legitimate copy.

I've been hoping that GOG would get it, but so far that hasn't happened and no one knows if it'll ever happen.

thanks for the reply!

i remember running the game on windows XP or maybe vista (probably XP) so i think i can run a copy on windows 10. theres a lot of old XP games i have on hard disc which work (a ♥♥♥♥ ton of popcap cames from the early 2000s, conflict: desert storm and other conflict games, halo 2 vista, some version of tetris made for XP which im forgetting the name of, ect...)

anyways i guess oregon trail will just have to live on for me as a memory and nothing more. oh well.

I sent you a friend request because I have some idea of where you could get a copy without resorting to abandonware, but posting it might no coincide with Steam forum guidelines.

You can still get the 5th edition of it on Amazon. As for the earlier versions, I haven't seen them around for years. (Although I actually do still have one of the older ones on disk somewhere--but no computer with a disk drive!)

You can get a 3.5" diskette drive that connects through USB, although chances are the older titles would've come on 5.25" floppy diskettes. I've never seen a USB 5.25" diskette drive other than some home projects people have done online.
